O.K. based responses to the AC picnic idea (sticky at the top of the page) I guess we will go for it. So the first thing is to get some numbers on who will and won't come and who would like to but can't commit yet.
We picked Saturday July 22nd 2006 for the picnic, In Columbus Ohio. The idea right now is to have it at the Zoo Shelterhouse (confirmation pending), so folks can visit the Zoo and aquarium here in Columbus. If the Zoo won't work, there are a lot of alternative locations, in the area of the Zoo so the general idea should fly either way. Hotel and travel information will follow in the next few days, and we'll pull this together one way or another. Please respond to the poll and add comments.
Yhis should be a family and friends type get together, with plenty to do while we get to know the faces behind the names.
Special thanks to Matak for getting this idea rolling in the first place.

Also, Freddyfish has link the newport aquarium in another thread for us. The newport aquarium is one of the best national aquariums according to all reviews and can be reached in less than 3 hours from Columbus. For those traveleing from the south, or those who want to make a long weekend of it it might be worth checking it out.
O.K. for some reason I can't post shortcut links in GCC, Check out Freddyfish's thread on the newport aquarium.

I'd like to be there,
currently depends on my Family, or a possible carpool from somewhere in NE PA, or Northern NJ, a 9 hour drive alone doesn't really appeal to me...
but possibly see how I feel in the spring...

Awww, why isn't it in Canada? JK - I couldn't resist voting for that one! :D

I would certainly like to go but I wouldn't know for sure till early next summer!! Also, Columbus isn't exactly a place to travel great distances to visit  , but I think we should throw out some other things to do in the area (family and non-family oriented). That way if people are coming from farther away, they could make a long weekend out of it and see some other sights.

Absolutely, I will list sight and destinations along most major route from my experiences, and plan to have my travel agent help with other ideas as well.
Would family be welcome to come along with the members?
IMNSHO, This should absolutely be a family event. The idea behind doing this near or at the Zoo is that there is the zoo/ aquarium, and a very nice waterpark on the same complex. Northwest columbus is the center of the universe for golfers (no really Jack built it that way) and there are a lot of nearby state parks and reserviors. COSI (center of science and industry) is an amazing place for Kids and adults both. Ohio really is the heart of it all.
Anyone with specific interests or preferences that don't fall in the realm of the AC picnic just let me know and I'll point you towards ideas and places to see.
Dave
Okay. When I mentioned this to my husband, he asked if the family was invited to come along. That's a positive sign. Not a promise, but a positive sign. With the kids being a bit older (the youngest is four right now), we're trying to find at least one great trip over the summer with them. Problem is, my husband only gets the first week or two of July off.
We'll see.

Yah - Go OHIO
I will try my best to be there. We are planning a wedding that October and who know what will come up.
Really anywhere in Columbus or Cincinnati is fine by me (and I am sure palmbreeze will agree).
Ohio is not as "boring" as most people think - just Dayton is (:))

Wooo, Tornangle some of those places you mentioned are pretty far from columbus. But, I guess if your coming from another state what's a few more hours? I'd love to come but I'm going to college in California and it wouldn't be possible for me. To bad this wasn't last year, I used to live in Ohio.

O.K. I talked to my Brother who volunteers at the Zoo, they do have several shelterhouses, so I'll work on tacking down a reservation. He also felt it would not be difficult to arrange a "behind the scenes tour" of the aquarium. He said with a group such as ours it is very common to get a tour of how things work, filtration, care etc. I personally would jump at a chance to see the other side of an aquarium that large. I'll make some calls this week and confirm everything I can. I'll also find out about group discount tickets, deadlines for purchase etc.
My travel agent is "Twin Horizons Travel" in Dublin Ohio, Robin and Susan Schneider are the "twins" who own the agency. they will do anything and everything to help a customer from arranging travel and hotels to helping plan restroom stops along the way. Their web-site can be found here: http://www.twinhorizonstravel.com/about.html
If you call them tell them David Sullenberger sent you. They know me very well.
I will also put together a list of hotels and distances to the zoo as I promised weeks ago. If anyone has direct questions please PM me and I'll do what I can to help.

Let us know if the behind the scenes tour might work out. I think that would be really neat, and it might be the final push I need to convince my husband :joke:
And if anyone is coming from a distance, and hasn't been to Cedar Point, I would strongly recommend it if you like roller coasters  !!!!

cedar point is positively awesome, as is Kings Island at the other end of the state. Huge coaster both places, but the view from the top at cedar point has no comparison in the world.

Hey, I'm from Columbus... Are you sure those places are far from the city, I mean...I think the zoo is the longest drive from Columbus. I think I live within 5-20 mins of all of those places. ;D Speaking of which, I might as well join in being so close and all!

O.K. a couple of Updates for everyone.
Here is a link to the Columbus zoo and aquarium home page:
http://www.colszoo.org/index.asp
I have placed inquiries about both the shelterhouse and the behind the scenes tour of the aquarium. I should have an answer shortly.
I'm not sure if I outlined a general schedule yet but here is what I'm thinking:
picnic from 11:30- roughly 2:30 at the zoo shelter house, group tour of aquarium starting around2:30 or 3:00 in the afternoon.
Aside from that, I think it will be better to not set any particular schedule. People can come and go as they please. visit the waterpark, and or the zoo as they please and shift to other activities when they want. As soon as I have confirmation, I'll set up for group ticket arrangements, and post a link. Everyone will be responsible for getting their own tickets, but if you need help with arangements feel free to contact me via PM, or the above travel agent. This will definately be the 22nd of July 2006.
I might suggest that someone Set up a singles get together for that evening. But that is entirely up to those interested in the party scene.
If anyone thinks it would be good to set up a special group tour for younger children let me know. the Zoo does a lot of educational type tours (Duh) They also have a mussel conervation exibit that gives some insight to why mussels are protected, and how many different species are endangered, prevalent, etc. I plan to incorporate the mussel information into our tour if they will do so.

LOL...I Know someone who feels the same as you about flying. She had the opportunity to go to England and meet her penpal whom she had been writing to since she was 15..(she was then in her 50's)..she wasn't about to let fear keep her from going....so...she got some valium and spent the entire 8hour trip in a drugged stuppor...lol...I guess she figured if something went wrong....in that state, she wouldn't care less...LOL !

I'm not sure where Amtrack Stops in Ohio, but can find out. The Zoo is being a little difficult to talk to. Mostly due to my schedule, and their Short staff. The behind the Scenes tour is at least 99% set, the shelterhouse is still up for discussion. The cost is the issue. I can commit and spend some funds but due to local ordinance at my home, there is a limit to the funds I may expend. If we don't get the Zoo Shelterhouse, We have several other options nearby (within a mile)

Unfortunately the closets Amtrack is up in Cleveland or Down in Cincinnati. I remember having to take it to get home from VA one time. That is a 2 hour drive still from Cleveland to Columbus but if you have the time it's not a bad drive and you can see some Sites in Cleveland too.

Von Vay or another the tour will definately happen. I am still playing phone tag with the zoo after 3 months, but basically the cost of the tour is the only thing undetermined, and I'm prepared (within reason) to address that. I have been busier than I prefer at work lately, but haven't forgotten that things need planned and will just assure everyone that it will all come together.

O.K.
First thing is anyone who thinks they want to go please copy this e-mail address:
drilldr@earthlink.net
In the event that the boards go down again, everyopne will have a way to contact me. IF you send me an e-mail please put Aquaria central in the subject line. I am possitively brutal with any e-mail I don't recognize the source of. In other words if you don't put AC in the subject line you will probably be deleted without being read and most likely be reported as spam so I won't get any more e-mails from that address.
On to the good stuff:
After several months of phone tag, Things are confirmed. We will have a large shelterhouse complete with large charcoal grill from 10:30-12:30, The behind the scenes tour of the aquarium will run from 1:30- 3:30. As far as the tour I set it up for 40-60 people, I'd like those who are absolutely sure they will be there to give me their names via e-mail. I will keep a running list in the event we get more than 60 people who want to attend the tour, I can make arrangements. Or worst case scenario I'll know who committed first, so I can be fair in leaving anyone out. The Zoo seems quite easy to work with (As well they should be for the price of a shelterhouse and tour) So if we have a high turnout, and I get numbers in advance, I'm sure we can make arrangements.
Standard ticket prices are $10 adult, $6.00 children, and $8.00 For folks RTR's age :D :D
I can get group rate discount tickets which knocks $2 off the price, Folks will have to let me know how many people are interested, I need 7 weeks notice to order the group rate tickets. I can be at the Zoo pretty early to pass them out or I can mail them to folks. Either way I'll keep a headcount and order tickets at the 7 week mark. This will give me time to get them and mail if necessary. They will not bill me for the tickets until they are redeemed but did caution me against ordering too many extra's as they do have some surcharges to prevent abuse. So if you are more than 85% sure and want to save $2 a head let me know. If I meet folks at the gate, I'll collect for tickets at that time. If I mail them we'll work out something acceptable to both parties.
I would dearly love to get AC t-shirts done up for this, but Would ASk for a volunteer to make that happen if anyone else thinks it's a fun idea. We would of course need Michael's Blessing on t-shirts. IF t-shirts don't work out we could all wear purple strings (In addition to normal clothing) I guess.
I will work out details on lunch, but I'm thinking simple like Burgers, Dogs and Brats. Veggie trays, fruit, and chips. Everyone can supply their own beverages . As far as beverages, when deciding what to bring, Please remember that Alchohol is not permitted in the zoo, I do not know for sure about the shelterhouse (Check the zoo website) and lastly this is a family event, so please use some discretion on the subject of beverages.
Any thoughts or ideas on lunch please let me know, and anyone willing to volunteer to help let me know. IF we have enough folks I could still cook a pig, but there is a lot of work that goes into that so we'll see what kind of numbers we get confirmation on. As far as funding, I have committments enough that I know we can cover cost (Two memebers committed to $250 each if needed), but We (JHJ) has volunteered to work on some local fundraising to help.
TornAngel is in charge of picking a spot (Bar/ Night club) for an evening get together. You do not need to be a drinker to socialize at the bar in the evening.
Anyone who needs information on local churches, hotels, travel info, or anything else please either contact the travel agent I linked earlier in the thread, or e-mail me, I'll help as much as possible. For anyone who wants to camp, Delaware state park or Alum Creek State park are probably the best bet, they are both less than 30 minutes from the Zoo. Information can be found at the Ohio Department of natural resources website. Ohio does allow you to reserve campsites in advance, and both Delawar and Alum Creek are excellent campgrounds.
If anyone is curious, the cost of tour and shelterhouse comes to $500 with a $200 non-refundable deposit due next week. Lunch costs will depend on how many people show up, but could add a good amount to the total as well. I am not asking for donations because I do not wish to conflict with the donations needed to run this sight, but if you have ideas for fund raising please e-mail me ar PM JHJ here on the boards. This is not a request for money , just a notice to let folks know what is involved in this get together.

If anyone has suggestions on a type of night time Hang out they would like I can suggest many! Just e.mail me here or if AC goes down again at esther.m.chung@gmail.com
The place I am thinking of is very casual with lot's of seating, pool tables, darts, big screen TV and serves both bar and restaurant food. It's very laid back for Any age and they don't blast music so you can actually carry on good conversations.
If you want to get out and boogie I know TONS of clubs for all different flavors ;)
There is even a nearly 24 hour bowling Alley and Diner I can direct you to :)

Slappy,
You wouldn't be volunteering to start working on the 2007 AC picnic would you???? It is probably not too early to start planning, and IMHO it would be awesome to do one near each of the national aquariums over the next several years. I'd drive to Atlanta in a heartbeat to attend, and might even Stick some of the locals around here in the expedition and have a carpool party.
dave
man id like to go... as its a 3 hour drive... but the fact that im a minor and id have to drag my parents along would hinder my plans... plus id have to keep up my cross country practice routine! are there any good running parks in Columbus? id probably have to run 7-9 miles that saturday...

If I lived in Atlanta I might actually consider voluteering for the 'job'. But I can't guarantee I'd even be able to go next year either, therefore I wouldn't feel justified to spend the time necessary to plan such an event. A gathering in Atlanta would definitely increase my chances of attending, however. ;)

Lots of places to run, lots of parks and recreational area. Bring your parents along, they might really enjoy themselves, and we'd love to have them there.
Dave
If anyone has suggestions on a type of night time Hang out they would like I can suggest many! Just e.mail me here or if AC goes down again at esther.m.chung@gmail.com
The place I am thinking of is very casual with lot's of seating, pool tables, darts, big screen TV and serves both bar and restaurant food. It's very laid back for Any age and they don't blast music so you can actually carry on good conversations.
If you want to get out and boogie I know TONS of clubs for all different flavors ;)
There is even a nearly 24 hour bowling Alley and Diner I can direct you to :)
With you mentioning bowling alley, I may get my husband interested to go! LOL.
This sounds like it could be so fun. I really wish I could come. :(

Is there any interest in iron-on logos for t shirts, etc? I have some of the computer paper around that you use for iron-on transfers, I could make some. Not sure what to put on it, tho. People have kind of spread to a variety of sites. Suggestions? Is there an interest?
i think i will be able to go... my parents are still talking about it, but it appears that i will be able to make it to the July 22 tour, that is if there is still room for me on the tour...

Lots of places to run in Columbus!! I actually went to Ohio State and I'm sure if you ask where their teams run they will tell you. I know there are some great trails right by the river and great parks too.
Have fun guys, I would love to make it back to Ohio, maybe next year!!!

O.K. Lobo, I'm going to count you and your parents, I can also check into somewhere to run. There are a million or so parks in columbus Most if not all have running and biking trails. Do you want Me to hold three discount tickets for you?

Don't feel bad Lobo, Between the scheduling of my BF's new job and the fact that our rent didn't get paid bc BF didnt work for a month is causing us not to be able to go either. I am pretty bummed. :(

I have tickets in hand, Anyone who wants them mailed to their homes in advance Needs to PM me. We can work out payment details. The numbers aren't too good right now, so we'll probably be inviting the local aquarium club.
BTW if I mail tickets you'll have your parking pass in advance

I assume we are meeting at the shelterhouse... are they numbered/named? Should be a map there of the zoo so finding it shouldnt be too difficult, just got to know what to look for.
trkyhunter91
07-19-2006, 1:04 PM
Yes I think the shelter house should be signed that way if theres anyone thats late or just pay at the zoo for the tickets its easier to find everyone. I know Dave was saying he already has the tickets on hand so I dont want him to lose out on money. I will try to find him first at the gate before I get them from the zoo.
Is the same schedule still the same as last posted or is the aquarium tour going to be at a diff. time now. I have a 2 to 3 hr drive depending on traffic and construction W/ a 4yr old that has back troubles. So I will have to make several stops too. She is use to sleeping till 9am so I dont know how its gonna work out getting up and leaving so early in the morning. Prob. a total grouch!!! Wish me luck. See you all in a few days. Shannon

The Zoo opens at 9:00 am, I'll be at the Gate from 8:30 to at least 9:30. If I know you are coming, I'll hang around if I don't see you by 9:30. I am 6'11" tall and weigh 450 pounds. I'll be wearing a ball cap. Don't look for someone extremely obese. I am not by any means in good shape, but I'm not what most folks picture at 450 pounds. The tickets only get bgilled when they are redeemed, so if they go unused I am out nothing. The flip side is if you get them from me it's $2 off regular price and parking is free.

Oh Yeah, The shelterhouse will have a sign that Says ABAC and AF Unfortunately I didn't specify comma's and spacing on the initials, so it looks a little weird. Either way you'll smell the hickory smoke and once again you'll be able to see me above the crowd :)

LOL thanks for the warning on the sign. That would prob. of sent me on looking somewhere else. I will try my best to be there before you go to the shelter house. So parking is free with your tickets? Do we go to the gate and get them before we park then? I ve never been there, well when I was 4yrs old. LOL Id say everything has changed since then and I dont see me remembering that far back. Thanks Dave .

No one has mentioned if there is anything yet needed in the way of food? Is there anything that were short on? BTW I'll probably be wearing a half black/half camo ball cap and probably a tshirt with a deer on it, although thats not a garuntee at this point.

Well, I had a fun day at the Columbus Zoo today (along with my wife and friend, and the rest of you all). We actually put in a full day there, until they prety much closed. Thanks Dave and all who helped put this on, it was a good time (and the first time I have visited the zoo myself). I do apologize if I didnt socialize much, I am kinda shy :o
I did get some pretty nice pictures and I also took a few movie clips of the reef and manatees.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say that it was nice meeting you all and we had a wonderful time. Thanks so much Dave and who ever else that put this together. I wish I'd got to say bye. We was so busy with Alexis (well she kept us moving) that we lost track of time. By the time we got back to the gate everyone was gone. And thanks again for all the plants. I hope we can make them work. I didnt get to talk too much about them from running after Alexis and dont even know what I have....so looks like lots more research for me. Kevin wont remember much lol. Hope we can do this again sometime maybe next time at Newport. This was sooo much fun.
Shannon
Hey All ! Lets hear from the rest of you...and pics of all of you together...I do hope someone got that shot !!! :D

awww I never thought of a group picture! and Im always taking pictures. I was so busy with the little one and she was busy trying to pull us to the animals(didnt care in the least about fish tanks) that my head was kinda spinning all day. LOL I couldnt think straight and I also dont do too good in large crowds either and was it ever packed there. The staff said that there was more ppl there than they'd had in months.
Maybe next time we can do the group pic thing. That would of been nice. I think the only pic of anyone I got was of the little girl that was there. Her and Alexis didnt want to seperate. They had so much fun together. She said Mommy can we go to her house tomm.

I know there will be a picture thread over at the other forum (Check my Signature) probably tomorrow. I don't think anyone did a group shot, but there were a lot of pictures taken especially of the Reef tour. Man what an awesome sight to see that reef from above. The public view through the Glass does not do it justice IMO.

Thanks so much for organizing this, Dave!!! It was great to meet and put names to faces of folks I've been talking to around here. Just got home this evening. We poked through a few antique shops on the way home. trkyhunter and loaches,...didn't get to talk you you much, but good to meet you. Torn..it was good to see you..and chat about chat in person. Gino & John...thanks so much for the goodies. Few people can say they got a personal tour of Reiverix's tanks!! I hope the plants I got live, let alone look as good as yours!
