View Full Version : Gourami - intestinal parasite suspected

Hi

Getting very disheartened with all the death I've witnessed in our aquarium since getting it.

First an attack of Ich wiped almost half the tank out - thanks to Davedka's excellent article, am treating with salt successfully - and all white spots are now gone.

Latest development is one gourami died a couple of days ago - extremely swollen and miserable. Now another is in the same way, showing stringy white poo (which looked very much like a worm) and looking very fed up. What can I do? I live in UK so not quite sure which meds to get? Is this internal parasite infectious?

Just been to LFS and there wasn't much medication to chose from - I bought one which deals with dropsy and "internal parasites" which I don't feel overly confident about.

I suppose the big question is if the problem is infectious/contagious and if I should euthanase the poor suffering dwarf gourami.

I have a 120 litre tank with the following

3 dwarf gourami (one turquoise, two ruby)
10 neon tetras
3 orange sailfin mollies
3 black sailfin mollies
4 zebra danios
5 leopard danios
1 common pl*c (small at the moment)
1 orange finned loach
1 red finned shark

(Suspect that the loach has become aggressive too following a couple of recent injuries - anyone else found this?)

ph is about 7.8
all other levels are good and safe (haven't got exact measurements to hand at the moment)
Have got temperature raised to 84 and two teaspoons of salt per gallon to treat ich.

Any advise or comments at all would be appreciated (and thanks to Holly for advice on posting :D )

Thanks

Ralph
