big tank

how do you determine the size water pump for your w/d filter. what does is mean, when the overflow box is "500gph"? is that mean my pump should be able to push at least that much water back into the tank? i know i should just pay a complete set. but i found i could save money if purchase & make my own wet/dry filter & sump. i just don't under the "gph" for a water pump
GPH for a sump retun pump is not a simple number. It is usually the "zero head" reading of the flow curve for that pump, i.e., the maximum possible output. Actual return volume or rate depends strongly on the height difference between the water levels in the two vessels, tank and sump. The figure closest to that height difference for that pump's curve will be close but likely a bit higher than what you actually get (piping friction, bends and elbows, etc, all slow down the water - friction and gravity are the enemy).
The overflow box number should mean the capacity of the box would be maxed out at that flow rate (under ideal conditions), so in reality, do not plan on using quite that much routinely - I allow at least a 25% margin, frequently much more.

the overflow boxes 500 gph is the max amount of water that it will overflow tank water into the wet/dry. the pump cant exceed that amount (500 gph) at the height that the water is pumped back into the tank. you can drill the tank which makes things a little easier since you wont have to deal with the overflow box and make your own wet/dry or you can buy a premade overflow and build your own wet/dry. theres lots of plans for them online.
