Try pool filter sand or coarse quartz sand at hardware store, pool supply, equipment rental outlet store. May be too fine for what you like but it's worth a look.

The best stuff I have seen and that I use is the sand/gravel from Red Flint Sand and Gravel. You can get it at sand blasting/filter sand supply places. I am talking about industrial filter sand, not pool sand, though a pool supply place may carry it as well.

This stuff is great, I run the .80 to 1.2 mm sand(it's actually more like micro gravel).

From what I read on their site the Aquarium at the Mall of America uses their sand/gravel.

Check it out.

Are you going to grow plants in this substrate?
