Hi ddayton21, welcome to AC! This question comes up all the time. There is tons of info. If you care to search for it, you'll get more from it than one single reply. In the upper right corner (on initial forum screen) is a search box. Enter what your looking for and click. Hope you have a few days to read! ;)
The filter (or filters) you use depend on the set up you're considering. Power filters (referred often as HOB or HOT, hang on back/tank) are good for fish only tanks. Canisters are preferred for plants (though some advocate UGF or Reverse UGFs). To better answer your question, a little background info would be helpful.
Yes you can use the spare tank for a sump.

no live plants, really i just want my water as clear as possible and also to have as much bacteria as possible.
P.S. it seems like my sponge is obstructing my water flow through my filter...it looks covered in gunk and im not sure if i should just leave it, clean it, or replace it.

d, start reading. Close the door, hang up the "do not disturb" sign, and don't leave for a week! :coffee: :joke:
You should be rinsing your filter (all the media in it, unless it's loose) every week. Rinse it (repeated squeezing underwater works) in de-chlorinated water, water from the tank if possible, just don't rinse it IN the tank.
Your tank will develope plenty of bacteria. It grows everywhere, not just the filter.
