My boyfriend has been using white pumpkins for years. In southern delaware they have a competition called punkin chunkin. Its a big event where people build giant cannons and shoot pumpkins as far as they can. Its a three day event. TLC is filming it this year for one of thier shows and the Charlie Daniels Band is performing on friday. If anyone is around the area they should come see it, its quite an event! Its this friday the 4th thru sunday the 6th. Check out the link...

The cannons are crazy....from what he tells me they use white pumpkins because they are stronger and there for are less likely to explode when they exit the cannon.

Luminas are cool. I grew a few last year and they carved up real nice. They also make a decent pie. You can't, however, beat an AG pumpkin (Atlantic Giant). One like Jack, here:

The pumpkin to the rear right of Jack is a rather small Big Max -- about the size of a grocery store pumpkin. I grew a 72# one last year and that one is one of her offspring.

Now, Jack is "okay" for an AG pumpkin. He is the first one I've grown and he weighed in yesterday at 204 pounds. The current world Giant Pumpkin record is held by Larry Checkon's 1,469 lb AG. Check THAT puppy out: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/

The pumpkin at the far left back is a 36# Conneticut Field pumpkin, and you can see how much bigger than that Jack is.

Next year I hope to get to 300#. I totally neglected my patch this year and lost 5 vines to Squash Vine Borers. Jack's vine was split in 5 places from SVB, I watered him once or twice, sprayed insecticides once, and didn't use any ferts. I'm surprised he survived. He did though. Next year I'm going to tend the vines properly. I think I'll end up carving in the garage though, my husband sez that if I grow anything over 200# again, I can move it myself :)

Hallowe'en is a very important holiday for me and my family. My pumpkins were rather sparse this year, sigh. I usually have 12-20 carvings of my own, plus my daughters 5 or so and my Funkins. This year I had THREE of my own. Grumble.

My mother-in-law came for Hallowe'en and it was hard trying to get the carving done with all the cleaning and stuff I need to do to make her happy. I doubt she'll come for Hallowe'en again :)

Hey, I've heard of those trees! They have them in Australia right? That's where toilets flush and the water spins the opposite direction than it does north of the Equator! :D
