Hey everyone,

I just adopt a male betta fish this morning. I work at a petstore and a male betta fish came in and he was missing his top fin. So we couldn't sell him. So they put him up for adoption. He was there for a week and no one seemed interested in the poor little guy. He was up for adoption for five days so I adopted him and brought him home. Right now he's down stairs in a gallon fish bowl. He's a little skinny so hopefully he'll fatten up a little. I'm having a hard time thinking of a name for him.

Try treating your male with salt? if the fish is missing its dorsal fin, then its losing salt. Salt loss will kill any animal very quickly. Perhaps salt at the level of brackish fish will help?

what color is your fish? i just wana no. maybe i can help with a name for you fish?

He kind of white and blue.
Is aquarium salt ok to put with him? I tried to feed him and he tried to eat but it seemed like he had a hard time eating.

i would hold off on the salt for now. MightyQueenPixie raises bettas, maybe she can help you.
He may not be able to eat right becasue the missing fin affects his buoyancy. You may need to think of strategies to get him to eat. Probably why he's skinny.

You should name him trooper or something like that. Any fish that lost its dorsal fin, was shipped in a cramped tiny bucket with a bunch of other bettas, then sat on a store shelf for a week deserves a good strong name. If your fish can't swim well, try the sinking betta pellets. Let it sink right past his face, and hopefully he'll suck it up in time. Good luck with the fish.

How about Finless Freep? A play on the old Bugs Bunny cartoon, with the high-diver named Fearless Freep ... defied all odds of survival, and dove into a tiny container of water (though he didn't live in it). I feel old for remembering this cartoon :duh:

Thanks for all the advice and name suggestions. I don't remember that buggs bunny cartoon. Although when I was yonger I did watch some buggs bunny cartoons lol. I think I might go with trooper or something similar (spelling?).
I have betta pellets but I don't know if they sink. When I feed the betta food to my other betta fish they float. If I soaked them in water would that be better? They would probably sink better than if they don't. I really hope he makes it.

How about calling him Mighty Blue? He's mighty blue (sad) 'cause he's been through a lot, and and also mighty (strong) and (the color) blue...

Or what about Finn? That's a good strong Irish name (it means "bright" and there was a legendary warrior in Irish lore named Finn McCool).

Or Strong Bad...(homestarrunner.com)....haha.

Hope he makes it.

IMO, your best chance to get him to recover is to get him into a 2.5g+, heated, filtered tank. In his weakened state, he needs optimal conditions.
