Hi, I was after a bit of advice, the kids wanted some goldfish, so last week we went out and brought a AR-380 (34L) tank, added gravel, some decorations, etc, and filled it up and let it run for 7 days.

This weekend we brought some fish, I followed the guidelines in the tank documentation that suggested that the tank was suitable for 4 -6 small goldfish or 3 - 4 medium goldfish, so we purchased 3 small fantails. They were added to the tank as per normal and after 24 hours they are still alive and vigorus!. I added some bio-starter just before the fish, but how do you tell if the bacteria has started and is doing it's job? and are 3 fantails ok for that size tank?.

I also noted one of the fish has a 'deformed' gill cover, it looks different from it's other gill and to that of the other fish, however it appears healthy, what could be up with it's gill? I inspected all the tanks at the shop they were all clean and the fish all looked ok (not that im an expert on fish health).

thanks!.

Welcome to the hobby.

I would not suggest any type of goldfish for a 9 gallon tank.

The nitrifying bacteria are doing their job, so to say, if there is no measureable ammonia or nitrite in the water at any time. You'll need a test kit for this, if you do not already have one.

Deformities in the gill covers (opercula) are most often due to young fish being reared in poor conditions (inadequate food or dirty water). There's little that you can do about it at this point in time.

Welcome. :dive2:
As already stated, goldfish need more room. I think you should go w/ some type of small tropical community, instead of the goldfish. (oh yeah, goldfish are coldwater, but tropicals aren't so you'd need a heater.

It it just me, or are there a lot of variations of "something fishy" on this site? (sumthin' fishy, somefin fishy, etc.)

for fancy goldfish i would go with 20g for the first, 10-15 for each additional. for larger common goldfish, 30g to start, and 15 for each additional fish. those fantails are small now, but they will get very big.

What are you tryin to say, or imply, with that roll of your eye?

he he, welcome something_fishy, as it has been said, your goldfish will not do well in that small a tank. Many people keep them in small tanks and figure since they live 2 4 or 5 years they were "healthy". Fact is many goldfish can live for 20-40 years. Some types can even live till the ripe old age of 70 if well taken care of!! You are going to be limited with stocking choices with that small a tank, but if you go with smaller fish like guppies f/e you can have a nice setup. Take a look at the specis profiles, paying attention to tank size and adult sizes of the fish.
