Recently, my girlfriend had a turtle for a few months. She used a rena filstar 2, but since has given up the turtle. I am going to use it for my fish tank, but wanted to know what the best way to do it would be since turtles have a lot of bacteria on them. She rinsed everything out over and over. I'm more interested in cleaning the motor area. Should I fill my bath tub and let the clean water run through it and into a sink or something like that? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a small tank or container you could run the filter on? I am thinking of the product Jungle Clear Water. You just wouldn’t want to dose a whole bathtub with it (might stain it too).

It contains potassium permanganate, which is used for parasites and gill/skin bacterial diseases. When it’s ‘working’ it is pink, then changes brownish to clear, sometimes it changes very quickly, in that case I would add another dose so it’s working pink for a while.
Maybe somebody will have a better idea, just thought I'd start off.

Turtles are no worse than fish, except for being possible salmonella carriers. I believe I read that most US cases come from undercooked food, esp. poultry products, rather than reptiles. Dump some hydrogen peroxide in the impeller area if you are still concerned. It is an oxidizer like the potassium permanganate.
I have turtles and fish and would not hesitate to switch a filter, especially after a rinse/cleaning. I wash my hands after working on any tank.

I haven't even read the post! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!?!

Ok, read the post. What's wrong with bleach? Rinse thoroughly afterward, maybe douse with some dechlorinator and you should be good to go.

Ha, whats goin on man? Between girlfriend and car, I haven't had much time for my fish, along with 5 courses and two jobs. My hands are pretty full. I am going to put the car I used to put into my tank again, get everything going great. I've been cleaning up the algae and debris. Added a few plants and a few fish and hope to get the ball rolling again.
