Maybe a dumb question?

Hey all. I was looking around here and saw pics of ashlyjames' new tank stand that he built. Very nice. Needs doors, though. :D

Anyway, I was wondering if it's possible to put casters on a tank stand? Maybe situate them directly beneath the load-bearing vertical members? If I were to build a stand for my 55 gallon when I move out, it'd be pretty nice to have the thing on wheels so that I could move it about if I had to. I'm guessing that 6 casters would do the job nicely and prevent the horizontal supports from warping.

Any info would be great.

Thanks a lot!

The problem is not can you do this but the cost of doing it.The H.D.casters needed for a large tank stand say 55gal.and up can get pretty expensive. With that said, yes you can put casters on a tank stand.

we have these plastic bottomed foam lined saucer things that you can slip under furnature, desks, whatever is heavy ( for moving). Got them at Home Depot i think, you can slide almost anything anywhere with ease on them. May be ugly, but you can lift up a corner half an inch and slip them under. Just a thought.

Couple problems:

All the weight of the filled tank and stand is going to be concentrated on a couple square inches; versus the 16 Square inches for each 4 X 4 leg.

Any small debris/crack in floor/you name it will cause the caster wheel to stop rolling; instant accident, especially if trying to move a full tank (very high center of gravity!)

My 2 centavos!

Yes caster are possible but not practical. As stated you are now putting your weight load on a much smaller surface area.
