The tank that I might get had hamsters in it. What is the best way to clean the scum off of the side of it? Is there any safe chemicals that I could use to get the glass looking clear again? Any info would be great. Thanks
If the vinegar needs help, and you want something gritty to scrub with, try using a paste made from moist table salt. It shouldn't scratch the glass.
Also, before you go to any trouble spending time cleaning the tank, fill it up and see if it will hold water. You might save yourself a lot of mess and time if you find out it won't work before you clean it up.
Canadians immediately suggest vinegar and most Americans don't even have any in the house. Making a paste with salt is a classic and works VERY well on pots and pans, too.
Just giggling to myself as my husband (American) had to learn about vinegar from me (Canadian) and sometimes I've seen him cleaning the windows with it.
Also, I bought some Python "aquarium glass cleaner" from Big Als and when it got here and I opened the bottle, I almost laughed myself silly. VINEGAR!
Vinegar rocks and will clean almost ANYTHING. It rinses better, too. :thm:
I use vinegar for cooking, and sometimes for cleaning, but I tend to only keep balsomic or cidar vinegar and wont waste that on cleaning. I thought the salt added to the vinegar was funny(it works, I just made the food connection) Add some pepper and olive oil, heat the tank to about 350 degrees and throw in your favorite fish!!!
I've used vinegar numerous times to clean tank glass...though I use use it mainly to clean my coffee maker.
Clorox, baking soda, and even hydrogen peroxide all work very well, too.
Me too! Vinegar is also a fairly good antiseptic. I also use it to clean and sanitize my bird cages. Cuz birds are really sensitive to fumes most cleaners can't be used around them.
Well, you vinegar-using Americans are not the usual type I run in to, that's for sure.
I always have a HUGE bottle of vinegar in the house. It's the best all-purpose cleaner.
It's funny seeing my kids' faces when they hear we used to put salt and vinegar on potato chips. Ketchup, too! Course those were the days before they had those flavours in packages. They did get soggy, now that I remember :OT:
Oh, wait, no. The most priceless face award goes to the one they made when they saw me eating poutine. Yah, THAT was awesome
