stocking help?

I am totally new to aquariums, so I need some help as to which fish can go with what. Right now I am doing a fishless cycle on a 35 gallon (tall) hex tank.
All I know is I want some fish with color, maybe a school or two of fish (like the neon tetra) a bottom feeder and some other fish. Does anyone have any ideas for a stocking list?

I have a betta right now in a 2 gallon tank. I was considering moving him into the 35 gallon tank. Can I also get suggestions on a stocking list if I decide to do this?

I also feel in love with the spotted green puffers at the lfs. What kind of fish can you put in with these or are they for a breed specific tank only? Just curious.

Spotted puffers, and indeed, most puffers, are NOT community fish. Many require changing water conditions--ie, start out fresh, then go to brackish or even marine. Awesome fish, but they will limit tankmates, require lots of crunchy foods daily, and lots of research. The betta wouldn't stand a chance.

I'd go with a 5-6 harlequin tetras, 3-4 hatchets, a bristlenose or rubber lip pleco, and the betta.

I knew the puffer and the betta would not go together. I was just interested in information on the puffer. Not so much for this tank, but maybe for a tank in the future.

I modified the list a bit...will this work?
3-4 Marble Hatchets
5-6 Cardinal Tetras
1 Butterfly Pleco
1 Betta

If this will work, can I add 2-3 more fish? Any suggestions?

Yep, that would be fine. You'll want to ID the butterfly--there are a couple of fish with this common name, one that gets to about 7 inches, and is seldom seen, one that is truly a hillstream loach that will do better in colder waters, and looks a bit like a stingray.

If that was your total stocking list, I would add 2-3 more of the hatchets and tetras

Could I add the Butterfly Pleco or would that be pushing the tank limit?

I had a GSP once and it killed everything in the tank with it even though it was much much smaller then the tank mates. GSP's are fin nippers and in my experience they do not let up till the tank mate is gone.
