I have Three Platies, One Male and Two Females

First, I have had them for about a week. they are an inch to an inch and a half long. About how old are they? Are they old enough to breed? What does their mating behavior look like? what does the courtship look like? What do the fish look like when they are preggers?

Any questions and/or a site with a lot of breeding info would be great! Thanks!

Pete

PS One of the females seems to be pooping like CRAZY. I'm talkin Guiness Book of World Records!! Is it normal for the poop to be really long, and several times a day? I do not overfeed. Only a little everyday with a fasting day every three or four days. Thanks:confused:

my platy's seem to like a good long poop too:D

your fish are big enough to breed

as for the breeding the male will follow the female around and fertilize her using his modified anal fin. its proper name begins with g i think but i can't remeber it:rolleyes:
anyway, the female will get 'fatter' and develop a gravid patch - a dark area on the abdomen. she can give birth to a massive number of fry but i tend to only get about 12 - unless the rest get picked off before i notice! she won't give birth until she feels the conditions are suitable and i believe she can even abort the pregnancy if she's not happy.

the female also stores sperm so that several broods can be produced from a single mating. as with most if not all livebearers platies will be ready to start the next 'batch' more or less as soon as the she's given birth to the last lot.

once you get fry put them in there own tank. once i know the female is pregnant i tend to put her in the soon to become fry tank and remove her the day after she's given birth. i use a 2g planted tank. and feed them liquid fry food, baby brine shrimp and crushed flake. keep the tank well airated and use a small sponge filter but try to keep water current to a minimum. also keep the tank clear of uneaten food.

good luck
