Hi

I have a planted 12 gallon tank (just put in the plants a few days ago), but am starting to think the 13W bulb that came with the tank is not bright enough. I'm trying to grow a few low-light plants but a friend told me I need more light. At first I thought I could just replace the bulb with a higher wattage bulb but I can't find a bulb that's high wattage AND fits in the same fixture... so I'm wondering what people have done... do you have to replace the hood or the fixture? Are small fixtures available as add-ons? I don't have much room left under the hood...

Is it a flourescent tube? You will not find one for higher wattage, then, each length has its own set wattage. You have to SOMEHOW add more tubes or get a different fixture. AH Supply (I have read but have no personal experience) have retrofit kits to fit most hoods and get more light in there. Look in the DIY forum to find out about them, there's lots of postings about them there.

Edit: here is the AH Supply site http://www.ahsupply.com/
Also if you search the DIY forum for AH Supply I got 178 hits.

if you have an incandescent hood the spiral flluorescent bulbs are great and fit in the same fixtures. be careful to get the right 6500k bulbs

If you are going to modify your light fixtures, make sure to give a good insolation for the electirc contacts. Water and electricity can turn into a real mess if not done correctly.

oh yeah sorry it's a 13W compact fluorescent that came with the tank... so I guess retrofitting is the way to go. Thanks for the AH link, I'll check it out!
