I would like to get a zebra eel,Im new to marine tanks and any info would be very welcome.I have a 120 gallon tank a wet/dry and a skimmer about 80 lb of live rock a bunch of crabs and snales and a few fish. I think the zebra would make a great centerpiece but I dont want to get in over my head and do any harm to it or the fish I have. THANKS

Zebras can get up to 3-4 foot pretty easily, and are one of the less aggressive eels. I wouldn't trust one with any small fish, and all the crabs and hermits and maybe even the snails will be consumed. You'll want to make sure the tank is well covered, as all eel are escape artists. You'll also need to make sure there are lots of good hiding places, as these are shy eels that will spend most of their day hidden, maybe just their head peeking out.

If you want tankmates, make sure they are all very large, so they won't get eaten.

I have had 2 zebra eels over the past years. My first one was killed after over 2 years by a new addition (picaso trigger) and the other one wasted away over about 9 months. I would pick another fish as you centerpeice since you will probably almost never see the eel if you give it plenty of hiding spaces. They are awesome and I plan on getting one again once my tank gets reestablished but they are very reclusive.
They are very picky eaters, I could only get my first one to eat freeze dried krill so I had to start soaking the krill in vitamins. The second one never really ate well, I could get it to eat a few pieces every couple of weeks and I tried everything else. Got lucky with the first one cause he would come out and swim all over the tank at feeding time.
