To keep algae at minimum levels use Cladophora aegagrophila, it is an excelent natural sponge to control nitrates and phospates.

Do you both have them?
I had to cut an paste moon's link to get it to work properly

I have been reading a little, and probably should research more first, but I was wondering if CO2 was necessary for their survival?

Yes FisheyLisa I have one about de size of a ping pong ball and CO2 is not necessary for their survival.
