I would like to know, Fish do not really sleep but during the day I run my filters and a turn over of 10x or more. Is it ok to shut them down at night. The current in my tanks seem to carry them away and always swimming, not hard but have to swim to sleep!
Not to mention my air filter makes a wave too!-0000)))))))))
Just curious

hmmmm

I guess its really up to you. The water breaking the surface creates bubbles supplying good aeration and a healthy oxygen supply. It also depends on the temperature of your tank. Warmer water has less oxygen than colder water.

Thanks Bubbles I think I will do an every other day type thing, I want them to rest. Watching the house when I am gone is hard work for them so,,,,,,,,,,, LOLOLOL

wrong answer

Sorry bubbles, that is simply a terrible answer.

It is necessary to run the filter 24/7. If the current is too strong, then fix the current.

Now, the question is, what sort of filtration do you have? It sounds like you have multiple filters plus an airpump. There are several options, the first of which is to get rid of the airpump altogether. Rising bubbles provide circulation in the tank, due to the water moving wiht the bubbles not particularly from the bubbles themselves. So, if you have strong filters, then you can skip that.

Next, we need to hear about exactly what filters you have after that. It may be that you can alter the filter in some small way to make the flow more gentle without altering the volume. Perhaps remove a nozzle, or enlarge spray holes, or just redirect a jet toward the wall to break the force of the flow. Tell us what you have and we can talk about it.

One other option may be to simply add decorations that provide shelter from the flow, like trout in a stream hide behind rocks and in pools with gentle backflow to rest.

If you have a canister filter and you shut it down then you can toxify your water in the filter and when you fire it up you will blow that bad water into your tank.

I also agree with running filters 24/7

Thanks everyone, I did adjust it to the lowest current and I will leave it run 24/7
Since I have a lot of bottom dwellers I can run the water current into the air bubbles which I think will drive more air to the water at the bottom yes?
Thanks
David

No, the current from the filter(s) should provide all the oxygen required. Airstones are for ornament or for gentle current in tanks where powered filters cannot be used (fry hatch and earkt grow-out tanks).
