Saving up some cash for an eventual 55 gallon aquarium, but I was curious if there would be any weight concerns with have one in a second floor apartment? I don't really anticipate any problems, as my couch is heavy as heck anyway, but just wanted to know if that was anything to worry about?
as an analogy, that would be less than four of your friends, all weighing bout 200lbs standing close together on a spot of the floor, it'll hold. If you are still worried, call your friends over...
You should be fine tho some apartments have it in the lease as to how big a tank you can have there
abnscout82''as an analogy, that would be less than four of your friends, all weighing bout 200lbs standing close together on a spot of the floor, it'll hold. If you are still worried, call your friends over'' the flaw with your analogy is it fails to take time into the equation-Anne
Agree with the others that 55g is not likely to be a problem (except with extremely old and infirm buildings), but It is still generally better to align your tank perpendicular to the direction of the floor joists, if your landlord can tell you which direction that is, that is.
If they were anything like my friends, the keg would only keep 'em there a few hours.
The type of stand you have will play a part in the weight distribution. One with four skinny leggs will have more of a chance of breaking the floor than one with a "full" bottom. I doubt it will be a problem either way, but if you are concerned, go with the full bottomed stand.
I agree with one of the other posters. I would just check with the landlord! That way, if you have to have them in the apartment for some reason you know you are allowed to have the tank, and you don't risk being told to get rid of it by the end of the week!!!
I would assume most landlords would allow the tank but you may find that they will require that you have flood insurance one your apartment. I found this to be the case back in my college years when I had a waterbed.
