Hi. Did anybody ever breed kuhli loaches? Three of my kuhlis are full of eggs, but they are not breeding... I saw tips on the web, but don't have time to get into details. Did anybody try or succeed in breeding them? Thanks in advance.
that be something for the people at loaches online. They have reports of loachbreeding every know and then. I saw some weather loach breeding reports. All the stories had regular sized males and one 7" breeding female. I went to the lfs and just my luck they had a massive 7" dojo for $15 and he was quit active in a 10gal full of bloodfins, going from one end to another. as soon as I got him before he even got out of his bag my 2 year old nese named him monster. In my 55gal he borrowed onder a rock and barely comes out.
I remember an article in TFH, some 20 years ago about breeding kuhlis. It involved hormone therapy thus too advanced for me. I don't know if more recent results are better. From what's for sale they must be bred somewhere but farm techniques don't always translate to aquaria.
Breeding kuhli loaches (well pretty much all loaches in general) is very rare, very hard, and usually only happens by accident. I hope that it works for you, and if it does, please document what you did.
Good Luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Oh, BTW, I just got another kuhli today! They're so cool!
Mine do just fine in gravel. I have pretty small gravel (by my standarts) (<5-10 mm), but then again I'm not sure. I wouldn't think that it makes much difference to the kuhlis, as long as they have hiding spots, something to eat, and the substrate is not overly sharp.
Back to breeding... My kuhlis have been full of eggs for about a month now (I wrote above that three are full of eggs, but I'm only sure about one), I was waiting for them to breed, but they didn't, so now I'll try to encourage them somehow . About 4 days ago I performed a weekly water change (which may have been larger than usual) and the following morning I saw that the kuhlis (I have 4) are in one bunch in the corner (opposite to that of their usual residence) and are swimming about and above frantically, which they never done before (they usually just lie around in one hiding spot all day). Yesterday I moved them to a larger tank (10 to 20 gal) and they continue to do that, but not in one corner, but about all of the walls and individually for the most part. I was wondering if that is breeding behavior I'm observing? I've read somewhere that a water change can stimulate kuhlis to breed (much like any other fish), but that they also require something with big roots floating at the surface to deposit their eggs on (I'll buy something floating as soon as I can find it to experiment further).
