Just set up a new 75gal and added 3 bags of Caribsea Cichlid Sand (fine). It says on the bag you shouldn't rinse it, but it's been overnight and it's still cloudy. In my reef tanks with sand finer than this, the cloudiness disappears overnight. I'm filtering with a Filstar XP3 with lots of varying size mechanical media including 3 pads of microfiltration floss. I'm probably being paranoid, but is this normal? I really expected the Filstar to polish the water overnight.

i have the same problem with my caribsea african mix. It says it should clear up over night but its been 4 or 5 days i am in the same boat as you are!

Day 2 post-substrate, still cloudy... Is there some clumping agent or water clarifier I can buy to speed this process? This looks like a low-level bacterial bloom to me.

I wouldn't add any chemicals.Just be patient and the cloudyness will subside,it may take a week or two.
