hi all, just purchased a new tank, it is 36" by 12" by 18" (the largest tank that i could fit in the space i have left). At the moment I am having trouble deciding what to put in it because this is likely to be the the last tank that i can set up for a few years ( cant have any more because firstly i have lots of other tanks, and secondly i dont have anymore room available). anyway i am open too ALL sugestions from anyone as to what i should keep in this tank (i want too make sure that i have looked at all options that are available too me).
TIA

What do you have already? You could go with a one species tank like just have ropefish or africian clawed frog tank. You could do a tank were you had newts (half water / half land). so many possiblities. eels; drawf cichlids; mudskipper; waterdogs; red belly frogs; some of the smaller loaches; native fish tank little the small panfish.

nothing in there at the moment and the species tank idea does sound apealing. is there anything that could be kept with ropefish?

I would not put a super agressive fish in with the ropefish. Nothing small enough for the rope fish to think of it as food. My three rope fish does fine with my blood parrots.

Maybe I'm missing something... according to my calculations this is a 30-35g tank right?? That would be way too small for a ropefish!!! What about a goldfish?! Sounds boring, but some of them I think are very pretty!!

although goldfish can look pretty impresive i think i'd rather stick to tropical

What about a butterfly fish? The ones that are kind of striped and hang out near the surface? Those are very cool looking!

What about a pair of peacock eels and dwarf cichlids?

An African butterfly would be cool.

Or you could go with a Senegal Bichir (P. Senegal), theyre really cool.

Ropefish tankmates: Nothing too aggressive, nothing that can fit in its mouth, nothing with claws (crabs, lobsters) that could damage its skin. A 55 might be a little too small for a ropefish, though.

Rope fish grow very slowly after they reach about 8" and the tank will be fine for a long time.
