I'm going to be buying lace rock for my cichlids from my lfs and I was wondering how I should clean the rocks. Would just rinsing them be fine or is there some kind of cleaning solution that I should use?

My next question is the feeding of my cichlids. Here they are. I have some plain old flakes, some freeze dried bloodworms, and a LOT of betta food left from my late betta. My question is will this be fine for my cichlids? At least for now?

Thanks!

No no no no no. Stop feeding them those foods immediately! It will lead to the deadly "malawi bloat" in no time.

You should really research the fish and find out what foods are nessecary for them.... ah well i guess everyone has to start somewhere!

You need to get them some foods high in vegetable matter since the mbuna are mainly vegetarian. The haps can handle a bit more protien but can still easily get bloat if fed too much. NLS makes great cichlid foods. Usually a 'general' cichlid food still wont be good enough, and you need to get foods specially make for african rift lake cichlids. Supplement with spiraluna and occational brine shrimp or mysis feedings. Only feed once per day and 5 days a week.... minimal amounts. Overfeeding can be deadly. If you notice your fish getting skinny then step up the feedings slightly, but less is better with these fish.

I recall mentioning diet requirements in your other thread....

As for the lace rock if its from a pet store a good rinse should suffice, in hot water. If its not then you might want to consider soaking it in a mild bleach solution or boiling it.
