Hey all. I just got back from the LFS after buying a pair of small angels and one of them has a broken dorsal fin. I didn't take a look at them after they were bagged. They were whisked away to the counter so fast and the bags put in a shopping bag so quick that I didn't get a chance. Plus, I didn't think to look at them before I got home to see if all was okay.

Anyway, my question is, what should I do? I'm in the process of conditioning them to the tank right now and I don't want to cause them any more stress. Will it slough off on it's own? They are very small right now (a little bigger than a quarter, minus the fins). Will it regrow in time? Should I attempt to remove the broken portion (I'd rather not).

Thanks a lot.

ihvae never known a broken fin to "grow back" or replace itself correctly. now, do you mean the support ray (or whataever you call it) is broken or is it just the tissue btween the rays that are split? if tissue, it will heal. if the ray is bent it is probably a deformity. broken i have never seen so i couldn't help you here.

you could ask to exchange it for another under these circumstances, if it occured at the store.

Oh yeah, the ray was definitely broken. No doubt there. I took the fish back to the store. Not the most ideal solution but, after all, I did pick the fish out based on its overall appearance. The clerk altered its appearance in a major way so I was left with two options: Keep a damaged fish or return it before I have any attachment and get what I want. I chose the latter and bought another one to boot.
