Are green cories an appropriate bottom feeder to put in a cichlid tank?

What kind of cichlid? There are way too many types to be that general. If you want a general answer, I'd say no with most types, but something like rams it might be OK. Saying cichlid is like saying shark. A redtailed shark might do ok with some things that a great white would eat.

Even rams for the most part dont enjoy the presence of bottom feeders or general neither do apistogramma s ince they primarily stay to the bottom. I'd say that none of the (dont get mad) but african cichlids with the exception of maybe the kribs would do well with cories and out of the american cichlids prob. just the angelfish and keyhole cichlids would do alright. The cories would be fine with the blue rams but they would just get chased around a lot

In general I would have to say no. Mainly for the reason that cory cats will not really recognize territories. Most cichlids I've owned have had very defined territories, and when corys come bounding in they will get munched.
I've never kept the two species together, but with my red tailed shark my corys were really subdued and didn't really do anything. And when they went in his territory they would get picked on relentlesly, simply because where they would run would be more in his territory and as a result, beatings. Good thing that's not happening anymore. :D
I'd have to say the 2 species of cory I have experience with(bronze & pepper) have been really boisterous fish with little regard at all for tankmates. They will also accept punishment unendingly from other fish as they have no defense mechanisms whatsoever, aside from the locking dorsal.
As for my recommendation go here: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/pseudaca/85_f.php
My friend has one about 5" with frontosa and d. compressiceps. Lets just say nothing can mess with it whatsoever. If it wants the shrimp, it takes it :D

bleh, can't say I really did. They are kinda cool, but too sausage-like for me and honestly, they are pretty irritable, pestery fish. I'm really enjoying my d. compressiceps and bichir :D They don't get along all that well, but the bichir is catching up size-wise.

i have about 10 cory in my 55 gal with 6 angelfish and 1 trio or kribs, with no problems.. the fribs are trying to breed so anytime the cory get too close to their cave they simply get scared away..
