I know this is a little elementary, but I don't quite understand this.

With live rock, does that corals that grow out of it come just by putting in the live rock because their "baby" form is inside the rock? Also, what comes out of live rock over time? How hard are they to maintain? When should I put it in? I have a new tank that is 2 days old with a Blue Dasmel with a yellow tail in it to cycle. Thanks!

Also, when I get live rock? Do I just put it in my tank? Thanks!

My tank is 10 gallons. What type of rock should I get? How much should I get (in pounds)? Thanks!

Well to answer your questions:

There is no guarantee you will have any true *Coral* growth, not like Acropora or Montiporas, but you may end up with some Sponges, Fanworms, Micro and Macro Algaes, Benificial Bacteria (Main reason for live rock), Pods, and various worms.

You might also encounter bad; worms (Bristles), crabs, Mantis shrimps, rock anenomes, etc. .

Also, what comes out of live rock over time?

The bacteria spread over the tank and you might notice better water quality and a more infrequent need for water changes. Not only that but you will have some nice looking coraline algae growth that can spread throughout the tank that bad algae has a hard time covering, nice benificial algaes may grow (If not consumed too quickly by the fish, but is always good for fishes), plus some detritus eaters in star fishes, snails, the pods and variious types of nudibranchs (slugs) that can be very benificial long term. The list is very long as to the various forms of life encorporated into your tank via live rock, some are bad though.

How hard are they to maintain?

Not hard at all, but medications would be detrimental to the various life forms on live rocks, just feed fish normally, theres no true *caring* for live rock besides good light for algaes and water changes for trace elements and maybe, only if needed, some supliments specifically designed for live rock, but this is usually just somewhere to speand money and not needed. Your feedings of fish and their wastes with water changes should be enough.

When should I put it in? I have a new tank that is 2 days old

Sounds like now is a good time ;) It will help you cycle your aquarium faster by introducing the needed bacteria for a new aquarium cycle. I would advise you not to fill up on it though until your tank is done cyceling so as you wont have the invertibrates and less hardy live stuffs dying that will with your first *Innoculation* of live rock. Just put SOME in now for a starter bacteria and add later to keep everything alive on the rock.
