One of my Gourami's appears to have a swollen gill. It is the part underneath and slightly below were the gill opens. Along the lower part of the opening, I can see the inner pink part of the gill and obvious swelling in this area compared to the other side. He has also been hanging at the bottom of the tank today - he typically tends to like mid to near surface areas. Occationally, I have seen the ropefish making possibly aggressive posturing with this fish. Could it be an injury or is it more likely something else? And how should it be treated?

water parameters will help people answer your question, if he were constantly staying near the surface vs the bottom id expect the problem to be ammonia but seemingly that isnt the case. post ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph and other levels if you have a test kit :)

Yesterday levels were:

temp 77*F
Ph 7
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10-20

Did 20% water change/grav vac.

But I don't think it is my water as only one side is irritated.

same thing happened with my platties. gills were real swollen and i could see the pinkness in the gills. they seemed to have a real tough time "breathing". mine died, but hopefully yours will be ok. was told it could be an internal parasite.

whats the quickest/easiest way to deal with internal parasites?

Just noticed white stuff around the edges of gill...so guess its internal parasites...

Not sure about the swelling, but look up cotton fungus/columnaris for the white stuff, see if thats it

the lfs gave me "parasite clear" by tank buddies. i didn't get a chance to try this b/c my fish died before i could use the meds so i don't know how well it works.

I have the feeling that people should stay away from this "Tank Buddies" line of medication. Tank Buddies + LFS = dead fish, from what I'm reading.

Someone list the ingredients and what parasites this stuff is supposed to treat, please.

Thanks,
Roan

it lists that is treats the following:

protozoans
flukes
internal worms
lice
anchor worms
flagellates such as hexamita or spironucleus associated with hole in the head disease

harmful to crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs.

active ingredients are:
praziquantel; N-[[(4-Chlorophenyl) amino] carbon 1] -2, 6-difluorobenzamide; metronidazole; acriflavine.

that is exactly as it's listed on the box.
