Starting over

well i gave my Two Green Terrors to my dad, he really liked so i gave em to em, But im looking at starting all over again, but i dont want just the normal tank, in other words i dont want Tetras and barbs, and i have already raised oscars and Firemouths and convicts which have all passed do to old age or jumping out of tank i also have a Jag in a new 75 gallon, so i was wondering what other cool exotic rare fish are out there for Fresh water that have good color and get atleast 8-10 inches.

Its a rift lake african.... but Fossorochromis rostratus is a beautiful large fish. I have 3 of these at only 1".... its gonna take them a while to get there but when they do watch out! Beauties! Going to need well over a 100 gallon tank.

Or Aristochromis christyi can have beautiful colors... and will reach between 12-14 inches.

Theres other large haps from lake malawi such as the Tyrannochromis genus.


Theres a whole world out there other than SA/CA cichlids! :D

d. compressiceps kicks *** if you want an extremely fast, and predatory fish. The big rule for tankmates for these guys is just they can't fit in their mouth. Watching one of these feed is incredible...They almost always take the prey from behind, even calling off the attack sometimes when guppies turn around. But anyways, these fish are really impressive to watch, as they are quick, and they have huge jaws(~1/4 of the body length). A friend's ate 14 1.5" guppies in a sitting, and it was only around 6 inches long.

Also, they do NOT bite eyes. I own one and have it with several tankmates in a 33 gallon and it gets along fine with everything. It is a fairly cruel fish though, much cooler to watch than pirhanas. For some strange reason they seem to put up with tankmates, but know exactly what feeders are for. Could this be from being aquarium bred for many generations?

hey guys thanks for the Responses, The Aristochromis is an awesome looking Fish, i also really like the d. compressiceps, im at school right now so i dont have much time to read or look up info, any advice on raisng these fish would be great, thanks again

The ones i stated, along with the compressiceps, are african cichlids from lake malawi. They are pretty much the same as regular freshwater fish, except they like a higher pH which is accomplished by adding crushed coral either into the substrate or into the filter.

While with this predetory big boy an occational home-raised feeder fish is probebly excellent for thier health, overfeeding may be deadly since they are still not immune to 'malawi bloat' (which is also triggered by stress).

Have a look at http://www.malawimayhem.com for some more information on setting up the tank, etc. The next tricky part is actually finding some on the market! We have rostratus and compressiceps coming out of our ying yangs up here but the christyi is a little more difficult to come by.

good call Kribs about the feeding. I realise we shouldn't have fed him all those fish, but honestly, he didn't look like he could eat them and we were thinking that the other fish in the tank would like a few...the only one that got any was the ropefish and they were already dead ones :D
