Wow, I can't recall the last time I actually asked for advice here, so, yay me!

Anyway, I currently have a 29 gallon. In it are 2 female, 1 male molly, one molly fry that somehow escaped being someone's lunch, 3 head/tail light tetras and 3 Corys.

I had more fish at one point, but never really like the setup so as one fish or another kicked off to the great Fishbowl in the Sky, I simply didn't replace them. The tank is what you would call heavily planted right now, but I could certainly trim some wisteria back and have a pretty space again.

I now feel like I have the room to start adding fish again. I want to go with small fish. Cardinal/lemon/Black neon tetras, maybe a few guppies to satisfy my livebearing demands. I think eventually maybe even some rams would be nice. If the Corys ever decide to give up the ghost, I could even shoot for pygmy cory cats, just because I envision a small active tank with small active fish and pretty plants.

So, my question is; is there any way to make this transition a little at a time?

I don't want to just "get rid of" my current livestock. I don't want to give them back to the LFS for 1/4 credit so they end up as feeders or something. I mean, the head/tail lights I have are aggressive little jerks. I used to have a nice sized school, but they are sort of... mean to one another. They only co-exist now during feedings, otherwise each one has it's own turf (the lowest in the pecking order actually literally stays behind a filter intake tube 99% of his time and I feel bad). They obviously have no need to school and only do when the great gravel vac tube of doom comes near. I just don't have room for a big fish to keep them schooling in a 29 gallon, of course. Would smaller tetras be okay in a smallish school with these mean larger cousins? Would the slower moving guppies be okay in a tank of faster, less calm fish? Would Pygmy Corys be okay with 2 albino and one emerald green "cory" cat? Also, what kind of numbers do you think I'd be looking at? 5 small fish to start, then add 2-3 as I lose another one or two?

We do have a 10 gallon freshwater that can house some from the 29 gallon, but I don't see that as an option since most of these fish seem to swim the length, depth and breadth of the 29 already. Thanks for your time and thoughtful consideration.

What about one angel fish in with all the little ones ?..........Oh..haha, forgot, it'd probably just eat them......

I have a 29 that I just added 2 quarter sized koi angels to. The other tenants are a pair of german blue rams and one neon dwarf gourami (who I really don't think fits this grouping) and 3 otocinclus.

I'm trying to figure out where to put the gourami so I can try a small group of maybe black neon tetras...before the angels get much bigger. I don't know if those tetras are small enough to become lunch for an angel or not...maybe I'll just have to find out ! :p:

Edit:
I took another look here and I see I didn't really answer your question Harlock...lol...sorry about that.....Do you have any friends who have tanks and are looking for a few extra fish ?

No worries, Emg. Nope, no friends currently looking for reshwater stuff at the moment. Worst case scenario is let everything die off of natural causes until I am down to a couple of fish, move them to the ten and then slowly restock the 29. As planted as it is, I doubt I have any cycle problems. Still, that could be years away and I sure don't want to have to not enjoy my tank as much as I could with my current idea. May my ethical fishkeeping be dratted!

Craigslist for finding new homes ... ?

Could you try craigslist to find new homes for the fishes you aren't wanting to keep around? Our area has a great "pet" section where I see people offering fish for free to good homes. Maybe you could interview the takers or transport the fish yourself to make sure they'd be well cared for. Just a thought. Here's the like to the Dallas craigslist: http://dallas.craigslist.org/. Not sure how far you are from there, but there are links from the page to other areas as well.

Thanks, Faith. I am four hours from Dallas and gas being what it is... If I can get the LFS to promise me they'll not just feed these fish out to something, I may let them go and just get what I want that way.
