I've recently recently lost 8 cardinal tetras after one week of buying them. My water parameters were ok. Ammonia at 0, Nitrite at 0, Nitrate at 5 and pH at 7.4.
I have a 29G (running for 3 months) with 2 powder blue dwarf gourami's and 3 cardinal's left over (which will probably die off aswell). Im planning to add 1 or 2 cichlids and 4 panda cory's, but I not sure which kind of cichlid too get. Please suggest a couple which will be compatible with the Gourami's and cory's and won't outgrow my tank. Any personal experience would be appreciated.

Ha Ha lol! Are you my long lost twin? My tank is almost identical to yours. 29 gal, 1 blue dwarf gourami, 1 flame dwarf gourami, Tank set up for about 3-4 months, and I just recently tried cardinals and all but 1 were dead in 48 hours the last one got ick and died dispite treatment. I have two cories, and have been considering getting a german blue ram. It's a cichlid that only gets 3 inches and as far as my research has showed is good in a comunitty tank. I would be interested if anybody else agrees with a german blue ram for our tanks. If you still want a schooling fish maybe look into white clouds, I got a couple of them and they are good and harty, don't die like tetras.

Wow this is interesting lol... :thm:
I have wanted blue rams aswell but I havn't looked into them since there is alot of debate about their sensitivity. They were my first choice for cichlids but if they are hard to keep I'll look into other kinds. As for schooling fish... I dont think I want any for now since Im going for a different theme. The schooling fish didnt fit in so well IMO. Im just going for 2 pairs of fish (Gourami's and Cichlids) plus 4-5 panda cories.

Blue rams are a great choice I second that notion. Especially for the size and temperment. Personally I havent had any trouble with rams being sensitive. Be forewarned if you are going to get a M/f pair. They are horny little devils when conditions are right. They get extremely protective of there eggs. The little guys were an inch and a half. They were fending off my angels, gouramis, congo tetras wich are all at least twice there size, and fiercly. Other then that, when not breeding they are very passive. A very colorfull fish with a distinct personality. IMHO I would not put a ciclid if any other kind in your tank.
