Hi there,
It's been a while.
I had aquariums before (my last one was a 55g), but now got rid of all of them when we moved. Now I would like to take up the hobby again, but would like to know if you can suggest where I could get the best deal on an aquarium setup (tank, canopy, stand) etc. I would like at least 40 g and up. I live in Canada, but if you can think of a place in the US who ships to Canada, I would appreciate if you could give me their website.
thanks,
Rapunzelle (an "ex-user" of AC)

welcome back.
check your classifieds, or if you can hold off until garage sale season, garage sales. otherwise, lfs's are an option. i know they're usually overpiced, but that's how they make money.
i wouldn't try shipping one. they're heavy and aquwardly shaped...not cheap to ship.
hope you find one. :D

Try Wal-Mart. I have found thir prices on set up kits to be very competitive. You can get a lot of food and accesories cheap as well. Check out the new store on Mapleton road. They might have something.

Sahinze, I have checked WalMart. It could be a good starting point thanks. I was just kinda curious to see if I could get something bowfront or s'thing not too expensive. WalMart just has basic tanks. If worse comes to worst I will probably go to WalMart for the tank & stand, & will purchase filters & stuff wherever I can get best deal & best quality (I kinda like Hagen myself).

A good place to look is http://www.bigalsonline.com. They have a Canadian section. Not a lot of aquariums though as shipping them is hard. I went to the Hagen website and one of their dealers in your area is:
Aquarium Moncton
Champlain Place
Dieppe
E1A 4X5
Phone : 506-854-0531
However, as already mentioned, the classifieds are the place to start. My borther got a 55 gallon for $150 (including stand, canopy, and filter).
Good luck,
Eager

Well Big Alls has a store in most of the big towns I've been to here in Canada. Theres 2 locations in Ottawa, and a tone in Toronto. They should all be listed on their website and they have really good in store deals on the basic aquarium...kits are a bit marked up (as usual).

I recently had some problems with buying kits at the Walmart here in F'ton. I picked up the 10gal kit for ~ $60 and it had a crack in the bottom... exchanged it and had that one have a crack near the top :( I talked to a manager about it and he agreed to split the difference on the 20gal kit. So I ended up getting it for $99 :) It also had an upgraded filter...instead of the 20-30 Aqua-Tech, it had the 30-60 inside the box :)
Walmart also has a good deal on their 55gal kit + stand -> $299. It would probablt cost about $500 after adding in gravel and other accessories + tax, but all in all a good deal compared to Pets Unlimited.

Yea the classified ads are the best place to look. THere was a guy selling all his aquarium stuff, 5 tanks(55g,30g and 3 10G) with all accessories and stuff, all for $300(US)!!!. Nothing was cracked or broke. Unfortunately I don't have the room(Moving out in April) for all those tanks so I didn't jump on it. If he still has them come April I will be getting those from him. Good Luck and let us know what you find. :)
