Hey i just got a 10g aquarium and i have a few questions. I plan on growing live plants so how long should i leave the lights on on the tank? Overnight, in the Daytime also? How often should water be changed and how much? What are some good things to put in your tank for goldfish? Thats all i have for now and thanks for your help in advance, plus any extra advice would help too.

By the way, I plan on getting a larger tank for the goldfish in a matter of time when they grow larger, right now they are a little over 1inch 1/2 so i think i will be fine for a while.

First of all, you should read this sticky on cycling your tank: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26051

I do not recommend cycling a tank with goldfish in it.

You may wish to reconsider goldfish with plants. They tend to uproot them. You also need to consider temperature requirements for the plants. Goldfish are coldwater fish.

1. What kind of goldfish are they?

2. How many goldfish are we talking about?
Goldfish tanks need to be double filtered and if you have too many in there, it's not going to work for very long. Plan on a filter for at least a 20gallon tank, more if you are overstocking it with goldfish.

However, we can't really advise on water changes or filters et al until we know how many goldfish you are talking about. They are very messy and produce a LOT of waste.

You should plan -- very soon and not when they are much larger -- on buying a much bigger tank. You will need a 30 gallon tank for 1 goldfish and then add on 15 more gallons for every goldfish thereafter.

Tank goldfish can live 20+ years if they are living in the correct environment.

Hope this helps,
Roan
