This isn't so much a plant question but I find some very chem savy people here and need their help, {no offense to the cichlid posters}
I'm trying to get the ph/hardness up in a "Tanganyika" tank. I have the coral substrate, additional coral in the filter box, have tried baking soda etc. My tap (well water) is pH 7.8 yet despite my efforts I can't get the tank above 8.0. The hardness GH AND KH each max at about 179 ppm.
My question is; could something be causing the additional minerals to percipitate out of my water. I suspect this, because of a grayish brown "dust" on the rocks, but don't know what to test for. My other tanks are all in the soft / acidic realm so I never had this issue before.
Thanks.
