I have 2.0.1 ball pythons and 0.1.0 Kenyan Sand Boas ATM. Will be buying a pie or het pie female in the spring to breed (in a few years) to our het male.

I love and keep snakes. Mostly native texas species, but my first snake was a corn snake and I have a special place in my heart for them. So many color morphs!

I haven't kept a snake since I was a child, I had a little ringneck, but he didn't live too long. I've had friends that have had snakes, a redtail boa was my favorite. Whenever you let him crawl on you, he'd end up giving you a good back or neck massage. And as embarrasing as it was, he'd also like to get inside your shirt. I also had the privelage to work with an eastern indigo in a nature park a year or so ago. She was a beauty and very sweet.

Although she's not a snake, I have been keeping a leopard gecko for about 5 years now. She's sweet, if one may say that of a reptile, but I'm biased:). I happen to like many reptiles kept as pets, maybe a little rare for a woman. I really think the monitor lizards are interesting, although I'd be a bit hesttant to keep one myself. Iguanas are another bunch of characters that really seem to become a part of the family. I may be ranting, but I believe that we mammals still have more to learn about the intelligence of reptiles. Their behaviors and personalities seem to speak for themselves.

matter..... wow roan, going for the piebald... i f'in love those morphs, ive always wanted one, i just never had the $15000 to spend on one... good luck :D The females are around 10k$ now, they've dropped some. Cheapest way to get one is het to het, but of course you don't know how many you'll get or what sex. We're crossing our fingers for a female pie out of a cross, but if anything we'll get some nice hets out of it. Male hets are pretty cheap, so 1 female could start a whole ballgame :)

oh, and btw, if you do successfully breed some nice pies let me know... I WANT ONE!!! :dance:Heh. Doesn't everyone who loves balls? :) I want to get my hands on one of Ralph Davis's plattys, what beauties! Snake God has been wonderful to that guy. Have you see his platinum ball? Imported directly from Africa. Quite the story behind that fella. Here: http://www.ralphdavisreptiles.com/collection/pythons/ball/platinum_ball_python.asp

The biggest news is Ralph's successful creation of a new morph, the King Pin: http://www.ralphdavisreptiles.com/birthing_record/pythons_13.asp

You can get a female pied delivered to your door for $4K now.
The prices have dropped significantly. Pastels and spiders have also dropped significantly. You can get a male pastel to your door for $500 or a spider for $2500.
The only ones really commanding the higher prices now ($15K-$50K) are the lesser plattys, leucistic, ivory, bumblebee, pinstripe, red axanthic, and genetic stripes.
Even albinos have dropped to under $2K delivered.

Don't always go by what the breeders post as prices. Cash in hand lately gets large discounts.

On a side note, I just added 6 of these little guys to my collection today. Not bad for a buck each.

I'm not especially interested in having a snake...my daughter is...lol...but she can get one when she has her own place. I used to hunt down snakes when I was a kid.....they were fun to catch..but keeping one in a tank doesn't interest me as much as these little beauts !!!

A corn could actually get longer than a ball python. Ball pythons max at about 4 feet. Corns can hit 5 feet. Ball pythons may be thicker than corns but are a LOT more trustworthy IME.

I've got an albino burm. Still quite small at 6feet long and 2 1/2 years old due to poor husbandry from previous owners. He's my favorite! And I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. I also have a flying gecko, and a desert iguana.

We have three balls now, we bought one last week for our 8 year old. Susan is a sweet little girl (the snake). First one I've bought from a pet shop. We wanted Deirdre (that's my daughter) to pick our her own snake and one that had been handled a fair amount. There were three in the cage, one in shed that the guy brought out  so of course it immediately tried to tag Deirdre. The littlest was very sweet and we purchased her. We had her checked by the herp vet Saturday and she got a clean bill of health. We're going to keep her in quarrantine a while longer though. Just in case.

6 running tanks (1 at my daughter's school and I have to go there every week to maintain it) with 3 more coming in December and 2 in April
3 Rough Coated Collies (probably getting another one in April)
2 Cats, 1 Bobtail and 1 Pixiebob
3 Ball Pythons
1 Kenyan Sand Boa

Hrm, are the geckos and iguana as much of a pain as bearded dragons are? If so, you've beat me by a mile. I never want to get a beardie again.

Anyhow, the animals were mine, but now daughter takes care of 1 cat and 1 ball python. Hubby has 1 cat and 1 ball python.

Hubby was one of those "I like snakes from a distance" guys. Then I bought Ricky, our het pie. One day he just picked Ricky up and held him. Ricky ain't mine anymore :) He sits there watching TV with Ricky wrapped around his neck. It's cute!

My greatest chore is making sure the kids and the husband remember the other animals -- screaming counts, right? :)

Hmmm I wonder what you mean by that.. My iguana can be a pain, well cause he is about the size of our cats with a 3 foot tail and he goes where he wants to go. He is pretty narrow minded that way.
Geckos are pretty simple and easy, its just all the crickets and Waxworms they go through.
The worse critter I got are my 2 Red Ear Sliders, they are pigs and require a cage cleaning almost every other day. And that is with 3 filters.

I had a coastal carpet python for about a year. He got around 4'. Then I put him out in the rabbit hutch for summer (secretly it was so I could use his tank -which he WAS growing out of- for my fish) and he escaped.... I used to take him on walks around my neck around the neighborhood and let him crawl in peoples' grass. It was fun.

just search on google for them, there easy to find. type in herpetology supplies, snake holding cabinets, etc. these are nice if you keeping many snakes, or if your breeding as it gives them some privacy. the only drawback is you cant see them unless you take them out. :sim:

I LOVE snakes!!! They are the BEST companion animal out there by far! My first was my Kenyan Sand Boa, Kisa:
http://web.acsalaska.net/~vlaun/Kisainthesun.jpg

My 2nd, a ball python, Hakuryu:
http://web.acsalaska.net/~vlaun/Pythoninthesun.jpg

And my 3rd, a Dumerils' Boa, Hera:
http://web.acsalaska.net/~vlaun/Catsnake.jpg

Kisa is the sweetest little thing! Nothing fazes that snake! She lets you touch her head all you want and has never pulled back in fear.
Hakuryu is my best companion. She hangs out with me for hours at a time, mostly on top of my head. I normally put my hair up all the time in a fancy up-dos and she curls around them and sits there, completely content.
Hera is my hissy missy. I got her last April at almost 4'. I don't have any of her previous owner's history and I'm sure she wasn't handled very much at the warehouse/animal supplier I got her from. She has good days and bad days, but is a beautiful snake with lots of personality. When she is having a good day, she's perfect! She loves to go outside, too.
I took Hakuryu to work one day wrapped around my head and two customers were arguing over whether my "hair wrap" was real or not! :)

The two beardies we had were messy as all get out and ate like pigs. I got tired of all the silkworms. Yah, I know people usually feed crickets and silkworms are more expensive, but they're better for them. I feed my dogs expensive food -- Natural Balance and Neura -- and tend to feed all my animals like that. Chopping up all the veggies. Scooping poop. Actually, didn't mind scooping the poop, it was when they'd poop on the logs and rocks and stuff. Can't scoop that.

Compared to my other animals, they were very care intensive that way.

All lizards are a PITA to maintain.

It is easier to maintain 10 snakes than 2 lizards IME.

Snakes eat once a week and their messes are easily cleaned up.

Lizards eat everyday, make a mess everyday, and always need maintenance.

Yeah but the leos are just so cute. :)

Well I went and did it, I got myself (personal X-mas gift to myself) a Bull Snake. This is a cute little guy and pretty active and looks very healthy. I got him from a very good reptile shop here in the twin cities. My girl saw a few corns and called me over at the shop while i was looking at geckos. Well, they were right next to the spiders, which I blacked out mentally, we looked at the candy corns. And the owner of the shop let us handle the snakes. Very nice looking corns and i was very impressed with them. Then I saw that they had cb bulls. I wanted to look at them, these were snakes I wanted since I was a teenager, next to the indigo. I got to hold them and so did my girl. We both liked these snakes and then the owner told me I was holding the one that would eat dead mice. I was sold. I will have to post a picture this week.

Roan, good food is the only way to go. I tend to only buy the best for my critters. I even found myself a site that sold Silkworms.I was buying from two different ones, SilkWormsToGo.com and SilkWormFarm.com 'cause one of them was always out of the sizes I wanted. I even ordered cactii pads, but neither of the dragons liked them  Now, THAT was a waste of money.

Heh, I was outside talking to my neighbour about this stupid "tree" that kept popping up in our fence line -- grew half on his and half on my property -- and I was telling him how I'd chopped it down SEVERAL times, dumped stump killer on it, you name it but the dang thing wouldn't die. He told me he'd done the same. Then he said, "Yah, mulberry trees are almost impossible to get rid of once they get growing." MULBERRY?? I almost croaked. Here I am paying like $20 a pound for powdered silkworm food and there's a bloody mulberry tree (more like a weed) in my own back yard. ROFL!

How come 98% of those Silkworm farms are in CA? Shipping is nuts to the East Coast.

That reminds me, I've got about 3 or 4 ½ or 1 pound packages of powder lying around that we are not going to use. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. I'll probably let it go for $5 a pound + shipping.

Just a note in case someone is thinking of getting a bearded dragon . . .

Unless you are prepared for a possible heartbreak, don't get more than one and DEFINITELY do not get any that are different sizes.

We bought our daughter's dragon at a local pet shop. S/he was really small, like most are at pet shops, but a sweet little thing. She just loved it to death. Little guy started worming its way into my heart, too. My husband always liked lizards and while we were at the reptile show in MD, he decided to get one too.

Unfortunately the one he bought (citrus/tangerine female) was much larger than our other one.

We had them in a 65g dragon cage for about a month and they were getting along fine. Without going into great detail -- because it hurts and bothers me a lot -- that the big dragon killed the little one. One bite to the head. That's all it took.

Unfortunately both my daughter and I witnessed the entire assault and subsequent death with no way to react in time to save little Syra.

Lesson learned. When it's not your pet sometimes you don't realize how much you care for it until it's gone.

Sigh.

Oh Roan that is so sad. The kids and I have been considering a bearded dragon now for a while. I have been told that they can be very aggressive when they get larger and that gives me cause for pause. I think they are such awesome lizards.

This spring our neighbor found an injured lizard and called me to check it out. While trying to catch it he pulled it's tail off :mad2: . Turns out it was a female Western Blue Tailed Skink and I carried her home and put her in a reptile tank until she could heal. We all really loved caring for Lucy and thankfully she recovered from her injuries fabulously and the kids and I released her back into our flower bed. It was a good lesson for the kids as well about "wild" animals remaining wild. So now we are trying to figure out just what lizard would be best for our family. We have also checked out some really awesome chamilions that our LPS breeds. I know they would require a different habitat than the bearded dragon but the habitats themselves are beautiful.

Can anyone reccomend a "first lizard" for our family? We don't want something that would get too large and would enjoy something that would be easily handled yet not be overly hard to feed or care for.

Well a good first lizard is always the leopard gecko, even though they do not like to be handled to much, can get stressed.
Are you looking for something that you would like to hold all the time? or every blue moon?
I would probably go with a Leo, they are pretty friendly and pop up to be feed.
I have one male that every time I open up the cage door he pops his head out his hide hole and begs for food. I have gotten him to the point of taking meal worms and waxies from my fingers. But I have to be careful cause he will grab my finger thinking its a worm. :)
I would look for a good reptile shop in your area instead of petco or petsmart. You may get a better lizard from a local shop than a box shop. Or see if you can find some local breeders in your area and I recommend the normal phase, they are pretty lizards but cheaper than the fancy colors.

I would look for a good reptile shop in your area instead of petco or petsmart. You may get a better lizard from a local shop than a box shop. Or see if you can find some local breeders in your area and I recommend the normal phase, they are pretty lizards but cheaper than the fancy colors.

Thanks Trickster. They are adorable I have seen them before. I rarely shop at "chain stores" and there is a good small LPS the specializes in reptiles not too far from us. I will definately do some more research and consider them.

No...daily handling isn't really a must. My 6 year old daughter LOVES snakes, lizards, frogs etc and has been begging for a lizard. I think they are fascinating creatures. It isn't something we are going to rush into and will make sure we make a very educated purchase. Her dream would be a snake. I think snakes are beautiful, I'm not afraid of them, yet I don't think I would like one living in my house. LOL. Plus I don't want to worry that if the critter gets loose that it would try to snack on my 2 parrots (one is only 4 inches big).
Thanks again! :thm:

Oh Roan that is so sad. The kids and I have been considering a bearded dragon now for a while. I have been told that they can be very aggressive when they get larger and that gives me cause for pause. I think they are such awesome lizards.Oh, they ARE awesome! They are not aggressive to people and actually seem to like them. Both of the dragons were wonderful pets to have. If we had kept them separated, all would be well and Syra would be alive today. Hindsight is 20/20 :(

It's very rare that a beardie will bite a person. It's only to other beardies that you have to be careful about.

We took the big one to our LFS (also LPS) and they are trying to sell her for us. We just can't bear to have her in the house now and it has nothing to do with us being afraid she will bite us. She wouldn't.

Can anyone reccomend a "first lizard" for our family? We don't want something that would get too large and would enjoy something that would be easily handled yet not be overly hard to feed or care for.
Even after all that, I'd still recommend a beardie to anyone wanting a first-time lizard. But just ONE or keep them all separated. You *can* keep them together (but NOT male/male), but it doesn't always work and it's a heart break if it doesn't. Ask any LPS that sells beardies and they'll tell you about arms, legs, and tails bitten off and others killed.

They are wonderful pets. Very intelligent and VERY socialable with people. Just not very nice to their own kind at times.

Yep, Beardies are another good lizard to get for the kids. One that doesn't mind being held. I also hear Tegus are another one that likes to be held as well.

But if you want something that is pretty, small and easy to take care of that you do not feel the need to hold. I recommend also the Anole. They are nice little gems of the reptile world and very cheap and afordable as well, avg price $4-10 depending on location.

That looks like a little alligator in its face. Very cute. I have seen them at the pet stores. Are they also called "Grass Lizards" sometimes??

It will be after Christmas before we take the plunge into the lizard world but I can do a lot of planning and research in the meanwhile.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will post when we make the final adoption.

They are actually called Anoles or American Chamelon, cause they change colors from Brown to Green.
for their care, you can take a look at this link by Melissa Kaplan.

But also one of the best in beginner lizards and very cute. I want to setup a screen in cage for them and then place them outside during the very warm summer days and nights.

Melissa Kaplan has one of THE best sites for reptile care. I'd recommend it, too.

Don't even get me started on Kraplan.

Her caresheets are NOT what you want to follow. She is a PETA activist who constantly tries to discourage reptile ownership.

Half the garbage she spews would end up killing your reptile.

Read her commentary. It is ALWAYS slanted to try and prevent people from owning reptiles.

Strange. Her caresheets on ball pythons and bearded dragons are top-notch. As good as or better than the ones on breeder sites -- in fact most of them either quote or link to hers or both.

She's often linked to in the reptile forums I visit.

IMHO PETA activist or not, I found her caresheets were excellent on the two specie I mentioned.

Is there something I missed?

Well, I finally got my Albino king cal tonight, boy is he a pistol. He has already nipped my girlfriend twice today. But he took to me fine, no agression towards me at all.

I will have to post some pics here soon.

Well, today is the day that I got the Ball python. My GF, wanted it pretty bad and we picked up a yearling for a good price. He is very healthy and active. I really like the shop that I picked him up. I got my other 2 snakes there, the bull and corn. :) We are now a 4 snake household. lol

I'm up to 5 now to start the new year with!
Scored a nice adult Brazilian rainbow boa a couple Saturdays ago:

And ordered myself an Anerythristic Kenyan sand boa that came in last Friday:

There's also a beautiful Sinaloan milksnake, nice cornsnakes and a fiesty Savu python, plus the last Children's python at the store. Yeah, you'd think working in a pet store, you'd cut down on your animals because you get to see them everyday...................................NOPE! You still want to take them all home. Oh, and I SO want the male & female pair of crested geckos! They are the neatest things!

Beautiful snakes, love them all, how big is your sand boa?
As for the crested, they are really cool. We got a gorgous Dalmation patterned male. He is like my albino leos and wants to be hand fed. We feed him regularly baby food along with a special crested diet for suppliments. And he will just sit on our hands and eat. He doesn't care to much for waxies but loves meal worms.

I used to have a ball python...had him for about 5 years then the only pet store in town that sold mice went out of business so I had to get rid of him :( Fortunatly my brother knew some one that took him and takes care of him so that helps. In the future I would like to get a boa of some type. I've been trying to get my Aussie friends to send me an Eastern Taipan, but they wont do it for some reason :\

We had a burmese python for 8 years. She was 11 feet long when we gave her away. Very good tempered snake. My wife insisted we give her away when our youngest was born. When I was a kid, we used to catch glass snakes. I haven't seen one in years.

I have a normal colored motley male corn snake named Wrigley. Named after Wrigley Field as I'm a Cubs fan. He's about 20 inches long now.

The Anery is only about 7-8" and my normal phase is around 11-12" now. Both new snakes took their first meals this week and kept them down. Both are now in shed. :)

I love holding the cresteds! They feel like soft rubber to me and I love how their little claws hook into you. It makes them feel like they are sticky! I'm trying to keep my electric bill in check or they would have gone home with me weeks ago. I have this really nice 26 oak bowfront they would look good in.

Hey Xauz, next time you get a snake also remember you can always order frozen mice.
There is always a way to keep your pets.

I hate snakes.....*shivers and hides*

Reason: My father is good friends with Bill Haast, reknowned snake expert and I was made to watch him "milk" pit vipers (rattlesnakes, water mocs, etc) as a child. I saw that man get bitten more times then I can recall. Also, my dad made me hold "harmless" snakes like corn snakes and pythons. One day, I was holding a common corn snake, and it decided to bite the **** out of my arm and hand, drawing blood in multiple little thumbprint size marks. It actually latched onto my hand and started CHEWING on me. I think I was around 10 years old. Needless to say, ive been scared of snakes ever since.

Oh, and for the record, I hadnt been handling or even in close proximity to rodents or food. My hands were clean and dry, so I have no idea why it bit me. Even Bill was suprised at the savageness of that bite.
