i normally leave my lights on overnight seing i work all day long. i leave them between 10 to 12 hours. is that ok?

it's okay but it would be better 8-10hours a day

It doesn't matter too much just as long as the light cycle is consistant. My lights are on a timer set at 12hrs on/12hrs off. They come on at noon and go off at midnight. Just set the lights to accomodate you during a time frame when you are there to see the tank.

aim for 8 hours, give or take an hour.

I do the exact same thing, although if I didn't have live plants I would probably keep the lights on a couple hours less.
