In Ad Konings book, "Enjoying cichlids" he warns that seashells and shells with intrances larger than1-2in should not be used. He doesn't really give a reason though. I suspect the when a shell is that big there is a chance that a small shellie could actually get lost in it, but I'm not really sure. I have a giant (3in entance) apple snail shell as a "centerpice" in my tank, and have had no problems. However, a "centerpiece" is all that it is. None of my multis ever really go in it.

That's interesting Moo ! Two of the shells I have in my tanks are from the ocean...smaller ones though.....hhmm......I don't see a problem with them as yet, but I will take them out as soon as I get some more escargot shells to put in.

Thanks for the heads up Moo !

I wouln't really worry too much. Some of Koning's advice can be a little on the conservative/purist side. I would stay away from the shells that aren't spiral shaped and just have a slit for an entrance. (know the kind i mean?). From what I've heard they won't use them anyway.

Man EMG 2.00 per shell. I'd just order a couple dozen applesnails for a buck each and.....well you probably don't need a description.

I agree with mooman, but if anyone notices somethign strange, update us.

Better be safe than sorry( but not TOO safe) hehehe

Lol Moo, yeah, I know what you mean on the price of those shells...I think they have hermit crab in mind...either way I won't pay that much for one shell !!

I plan on checking out the escargot next time I go to the grocery store...lol...
