hey everyone,
i did a search on the forum but it produced a lot of results.
basically i just need help with my problem.

i have a 55 gal planted tank, mostly anubias type plants -
-2 penguin biowheel 330s
-1 DIY CO2 canister for the plants
-2 55w bulbs with reflector

the tank is stocked with alot of fish
it has about:
18 rummy nose tetras
18 cardinal tetras
5 platies
1 green severum
1 firemouth
3 corydoras aeneus
2 panda corys
2 otocinclus
3 gold siamese algae eaters

basically the leaves have the most hair algae on them
and the glass has a lot of algae on them

i had the otos for a while, but theyre not doing such a great job of cleaning the glass. also the chinese algae eaters that i bought recently seem to not be eating the algae either.

any suggestions to get rid of the hair algae. it looks very unsightly
i dont want to use chemicals in the tank
thanks

Hair Alge

1. Don't use chemicals.

2. Are you over feeding? Gee, you have lots of fish in there.

3. Perhaps you need more plants to out compete the alge.

4. Add a couple plecos to your already over crowded tank.

Those Tetras and Platys are going to end up as a snack for your Cichlids.Did you do any research before you bought fish?

You have an overcrowded tank. You should think about getting a bigger one, or even better, a second tank to separate the tetras from the chiclids. They might end up as chiclid food.

For algae problem, try to reduce the ammount of feeding and light your tank receives. Is the tank in front of a window with direct sunlight? Try shading it a little.

Getting a pleco is not an option for you can not put any more fish in there. I know snails are good at eating algae. Maybe someone with more snail experience can tell you more.

Lastly, you could try to remove the algae in the glass using a scrub magnetic pad, or a fish safe sponge (get it at a fish store).

Ian You seem to have a lot of fish to worry about when you don't have the funds to run the filter and heater over night? Maybe cutting the live plants out of your tank will cut down on supplies you need.

When do you do water changes? what are your test readings? More info would help.

yes, too many fish.

And Chinese Algea Eaters are horrible. They are only good as feeder fish. They wont help your algae problem and instead will get aggressive as they mature. Get a few more Oto's, cut down the numbers of the other fish and try to find True Siamese Algae Eaters. You can order them from azgardens.com (but they limit it to at least 6). You really only have room for a couple.

A happy and fun tank could be:

8 Rummy Nose
8 Cardinals
the Cichlids
the Corys
5 Otos
2 Siamese Algae Eaters

Eventually those Cichlids will want to eat your tetras. But... Maybe you want that? Could be fun.
