Got 2 bettas 3 days ago. They are in separate bowls. They both refuse to eat. we have another betta which never gave us any problems. We tried feeding them Hakari betta mini pellets which they just ignore. If they don't eat I will have to take them back to the store since they will die. Even tried soaking the pellets in garlic oil (which I was told fish love) to no avail. Any suggestions to get these guys to eat?

dont worry mine wouldn't eat for over a week when i first got him. Now he eats.

Well some bettas refuse to eat things they dont know as food. Maybe they were raised on live/ frozen food.

Try some freeze dried bloodworms, tubifex or some of the other FD foods. Even better get some frozen brine shrimp. My betta goes in total hunting mode when i defrost a little and the shrimp get pushed around in the tank by the current.

A varied diet is much healthier than the same old pellets every day.

Mine refused to eat bloodworms at first - so i fed pellets and brine shrimp. After a while of adding 1-2 bloodworms with his other food he tested them and now he eats them just aswell. Let them get used to the pellets by mixing them in with other food.

71 is way too low...The room may be 71, but the water is usually 2 degrees cooler....You must have a heater. One easy way is to place the bowls in a clear rigid container, fill the container with water and heat the container...This way the water around the bowls is safely heated....Aim to keep it at 75-80...A quality, fully submersible heater is dirt cheap in the US and there is no excuse for not having one. Failure to heat them up is going to lead to a world of problems, including digestive problems, rot, bacterial infections and death...
PLEASE donot use any oils, garlic or otherwise in your bowls. I advise dumping the bowls and rinsing with vinegar many times to remove it. Rinse throughly with water.
You didnt mention the bowl size, but anything under a gallon must be replaced ever 24 hours with a 100 percent water change...This is non negotiable.
Good luck with your Bettas.

Try hand feeding defrosted peas without the skin. My small betta was so sad-looking (which is why I bought him), he wouldn't eat for days.

He still ignores normal betta food and will only eat from my hand now. He loves his peas and he loves frozen brime shrimp and bloodworms...he even does little jumps out of the water when he thinks I am coming to feed him (thank goodness for tank lids).

I feed mine betta flakes and freeze dried bloodworms and its really cool to watch them attack the worms. I keep the jaws soundtrack nearby for when I feed them. Jk ;)
