i've got a thin coat of brown algae on my plastic plants...any idea what this could be? I had one of my heaters break so there's been a drop in temp; could that be causing it?

also, i read somewhere that algea perfer low light conditions and that changes in temperature can cause a sudden bloom. Would more lighting and higher temp help out?

thanks guys! :D

EDIT: Nevermind, I completely missed the fact that it is brown algae.

i have heard that brown algae is a sign of unstable tank conditions...which makes sense considering there was a change in temp.

EDIT: also I have read that brown algae is a low light algae. My tank has had very low light until recently; but I finally got a decent tank hood so no I have plenty of light.

The temperature fluctuations of the water have absolutely nothing to do with the algae. Brown algae(diatoms) are perfectly normal in newer setups and in low light. Now that you've increased your lighting, more than likely green algae will take it's place. Otocinclus cats are known to eat it...you could try some of them if possible. The best way to combat it, is to simply let it run it's course. It will go away on it's own in time. Just remove and clean your decorations by hand when you feel it's starting to look unsightly. It comes off very easily.

mmk thanks alot everyone!
