i want a gourami. for some reason i really like the little honey gouramis, but the ones they have at the pet store are so drab looking, just plain brown/gray. are these females? or are the males just blah? i've read that you can brighten them up to yellow, gold, and orange by feeding them certain things.

the ones at the pet store look just like this:

with the stripe down the side and everything. now that i'm looking online, i think they're females, since i found a good pic of a male and he doesnt have that stripe, he's just got black on his belly and yellow on his back and orange everywhere else. these were "red honey" gouramis too.

i would absolutely LOVE to find a honey gourami this color:

Fish in the store are always drab, you need to bring out the color at home with proper pH, low nitrate, NO ammonia, and a variety of foods, spanning several brands/types of fish food, along with frozen and freeze dried thrown in :)

i called my LFS and they said they were going to order some honey gouramis next week anyway, so she's going to call me on monday and let me know if they were actually able to order them and when i can expect the shipment in.

do males have the stripe down the side like the female? because in all the pictures i've been able to find, only very young males, and females have the stripes. the ones at the LFS were only about 1.25 inches long, so they were pretty young. could they have just been young males?

Wow, you found female honey gouramies? The LFS by me only sells males because of the coloration. Young males should be somewhat yellow and will have a brown stripe down the side that disappears as they mature. The females are very drab and I believe retain the brown stripe into adulthood. I could be mistaken about that, though.

I'm jeleaous that you found females, though. I would love to tinker with breeding them. They're so cool and make a great community fish.

Anyonw know of a place on-line to get females while we're talking about honey gouramies?

i dont know, i'm thinking they may have just been very young males now....i'm not sure! i'm so confused! lol.

is there a way to tell the sex by body shape or something? i know females fins are a slightly different shape, and their "belly" is a bit bigger.....but when they're so small and shy, its so hard to tell!

i just called and the guy there said that its a mix of males and females, and that he's pretty sure he could find a male. and if it turns out that its not, he'll let me exchange it.

but i'd like to know if there's any way to tell the difference between males and females WITHOUT relying on color?
