I decided to set up an 8 gallon quarantine tank. The tank has been running now for more than a month and I have added substrate from my other tank to help it cycle. I was wondering how can you keep it cycled at all times since there will not be any fishes in it all the time. Do you have to repeat a fishless cycle one so often or is there another way?

I dont think you have to. Just when you need to use it, transfer the water from your big tank into the little one. I keep my quarintine tank dry until its needed.

Actually transfering just water won't help any, but what you can do is either let the filter for the 8g tank run all the time on your normal tank, or keep an extra piece of media (a sponge would be ideal) in your normal filter that would fit in the 8g filter. When you are need the QT tank, just fill with water, dechlorinate and set up the filter with that piece of sponge and you are all set, instantly cycled :D . You could keep it cycled with a few snails, or a couple of guppys or something, but theres really no benefit to keeping it running all the time.

I use mine for a snail breeding tank, This keeps it cycled ,ready and gives it some purpose, If I had no reason to I would Agree with holly and just keep extra filter or media on my running tanks and then swap it over when needed.

Yeah. That is sound advice. Having my QT cycled is not so important because I usually add small amounts of fish... 1-3 at a time slowly. A couple fish in my QT are easily taken care of.
