Is it better to do 10-12 hrs of continous light say from 8 am -8 pm
or break it up from 7am-12pm and then turn it back on from say 5 pm - 11 pm.

even if we turned the lights off at 8 pm they would still catch light from the lamps we use to light the room...it just wouldn't be as bright. If we break it up it gets about the same amount of light from the sun.

The only time it would truely be dark is when everyones in bed.

I think it's better if it's continuous, but that all depends on if you have plants. If you have plants, definately keep it on continuous. If yuo don't have plants, then either don't leave the lights on too long (I usually do 6-8 hours, I get a bit of sunlight too) or don't put them on IF you get a lot of sunlight.

Hope this answers your question

what i do is turn my lights on just before i go to bed, then turn the lights off about an hour after i get out of bed so the tank usually gets around 8 to 10 hours of lights a day.

you keep your lights on at night when your asleep? that seems kind of backwards to me. wouldnt you want the lights on during the day while your awake so you can enjoy the fish?
