Any advise is welcome to help me solve this hair algea problem, I don't know what to do. I've done water changes and vacuumed the gravel but that hasn't seemed to help. Is there a fish that will eat this?

This is what it looks like after a week.

That's a pretty severe case that needs manual intervention, you're going to have to remove most of it by hand. A blackout period of 3-4 days of total darkness and no feeding will kill off the remainder of the algae.

Your plants aren't looking so good, which is why the algae is able to take hold. What are your tank specs (size, lighting, water paramenters, etc)?

Hair algae ??

Lol...Ya Think ! ??

If you can find a siamese algae eater...it will clean that up for you..maybe you'll need more than one ! How big is the tank.....?

At least Your's is a pretty green color !! I get the ugly BLACK stuff !! Something's definitely out of balance there....too much light....not enough ferts......no CO2.....??? I'm not one to offer any advice here, though....you may want to try posting this in the Aquatic Plants section here. You'll likely find more informed help there.

Good LUCK !! :)

Its a 55g with 110 watts of pc that are about 5 months old. I've been dosing Flourish. My water is pH 7.8, nitrates <10, and very hard water (its been a while since I've done that test).

Lets find out what your kH level is. I see you have a nutrafin CO2 system but I suspect that it may not be providing enough CO2 for a a 55g tank.

Also, are you doing weekly water changes? water changes, and the control of excess nutrients, is very effective in controlling hair algae.

Martha! Bring out the Super Sized Electric Shears! We've got ourselves a BIG GREEN SHEEP in that there tank!

Sorry, not trying to make fun of your predicament. I've just NEVER seen anything like that. That is amazing.

In the plant vs algae war, yours has lost. I am . . . speechless. Yah, post in the Plants forum there's some *great* people in there that can help you.
I don't even want to try. I could make some suggestions, but I'd rather leave THIS puppy to the experts.

omg lookit that, but it's such a PRETTY green, too.

Ah, phanmac can help you. S/he's good plant people.

Yeah... its a little funny (especially when its not your tank), and that's what I like about these forums, you guys can have a little fun with it.

I really really didn't mean any offense and I wasn't making fun of your problem. If I offended you, I apologize. Sometimes I can be a smartass withouth trying.

I'm sure someone here can help you. Is that a CO2 reactor I see in that one picture? If it is, are you using it?

I'd say. Remove a lot by hand. Then black out your tank for 3 days without adding anything to the water (including food). After that, I dont know. I have many plants, but Im not like those people here who test constantly and keep perfect nutrient balances... I just wing it and have done fine for years.

Roan,

No offense taken at all, it is funny in its own way.

I have removed as much as I can by hand... and then a week later it looks like that, I just thought I'd take some pictures before I cleaned it this time and thought I'd ask you guys.

I really don't think I am overfeeding, just a little each morning.
