anyone have helpful hints on how to net those fast moving, hiding fish? I have 2 tengara cats that just stay at the back of the tank amongst all the plants.

i say u should put ur net in there then put some food
while they r eating snatch those fishies

either tat
u can scare them out of the plants the catch them

Place a jar in the tank--best if it's not clear, or can be covered to create a shadow. If the jar is in the tank for a few days, you have the option of 'baiting' it with a preferred food. Eventually, the fish get used to the jar, and will happily swim into it to hide. Then it's just a matter of putting a net over the opening, and lifting the whole thing out. Guess this will be harder in smaller tanks, but it works great in medium sized tanks, and with fish that have lots of spines that can get stuck in nets, or for fish that panic if removed from the water.

PVC Pipe tubes!!!
Make a tube with a cap on one end, place it in the tank. Gently scare/herd the fish around it until it swims in to get away from you. then place the net tighly over the open end of the tube and lift it out water included. dump into transport vessel gently and repeat until all little fast hidey spinay hard to catch catfish are in the bag :dance2: :dance2:

Or simply use two nets and sowly move from two sides and herd the fish into one of the nets.

I've never done this but heres an idea. If they arne't strong swimmers you can suck them halfway up the siphon tube and then put the net over and then remove the tube and they'll fall right into the net as you take it otu of the water.

I have 4 fish that have the spine problem 2 chocolate catfish and my pleco's they do not care very much for the net, though the plecos swim to my hand if i leave them in there long enough, I love me pleco's so nice and personable

Thanks for all the ideas! I think i'll try putting a pvc pipe near their usual hang out. I have thought of trying the syphon idea and may give that a shot as well.
thanks again!
