c'mon guys. be nice!!! I need some clarification here. is it most popular by numbers, or b everyone has one? I'm speaking of every person that has a tank, has a pleco. Oh mabey not the handful of users here that understand fishkeeping, but every one who owns a fishtank. My girlfriend has a 10g with an 8" Pleco. Most popular by far. but in numbers it's a different story. cuz how many folks have 10 guppies or a school of neons? those numbers might outweigh those of the pleco, even if there are less total tanks containing them.
And keep in mind it is "the most popular fish" not what you like best. there are 3 votes for knifefish at current, and those are quite rare, relitavly speaking.
i voted for chiclid to :p: .. gotta love em .. i got a 6 inch Red Devil and i love his personality ..

I say pleco in the sense that “everyone” seems to have at least one, if not one per tank... (so I guess sumthin fishy, I am thinking per tank, not necessarily numbers, otherwise it would have to be some sort of schooling fish that would win)
when I first started my tank, I did not have a pleco and ever couple weeks or so I would clean off one side the tank that was exposed to direct sunlight. (only so much you can do when in a dorm room) It was not a problem for me, but everyone came in saying get one of those sucker mouth fish, my mom, my aunt… my whoever has one and does wonders eating the algae.
A few months back I was setting up a JD tank and was asking advice about this and that from people at another site. I never mentioned plecos but they were giving me advice about the best kind to put with them.
It seems to me that with whatever kind of fish you keep… Gouramis, Angels, Catfish, or Chiclids… people are always trying to figure out what pleco goes with them. Not always, just pretty often.

I chose plecos too since I thought there were more common. I mean, sure, people have their specie specific tanks and sure, I choose to "like" cichlids best out of the list but per the trade, I think plecos are more commonly spread throughout.

Okay, I'm confused. Are you asking us what we think the most popular fish are or are you asking us which is a fish you should get?
Because if you are asking us what the most popular fish is, I'd look askance at your list. Where are the corycats? Platies? Guppies? All those are a heck of a lot more popular with people than a knife fish.
So, which is it? Is this for you or people in general? I already voted, but I rescind my vote! :dance2:

Well, I also go for the pleco or the corydora. You'll find one or both in nearly every tank out there.
The reason: they are both labeled as cleaners, so, whatever fish you like, you'll end up dropping a pleco or a cory to clean the tank.
After writing this, I just remebered I have a pleco and 3 corys with my goldfish, that also is one of the most common fish in the hobby.
P.S. I have an ordinary tank, noooooo. :hang:
Let's think about the other highly popular fish: the beta. Since it's easy to keep in a small bowl with no equipment, it's pretty popular among non hobbists.
*** Once I called a beta tank "aquarism as it's lower level" since most people keep them in a jar with no filtration nor heater. Just water. that was before I seriously started in the hobby. ***

I'd say guppies and tetras are the most popular mainstream...but if your asking what is popular with us thats an entirely different story.

I'd say, as a whole, tetras are the most popular fish.

From what I sell at the store I work at: tetras, goldfish, livebearers (platies, guppies, and mollies), and barbs - none of which are mentioned.

P.S. What's with the knifefish choice???
