Trying to start up again
how are fish lists for the 40g

trio of labidochromis - (yellow labs)
trio of copadichromic azures or virginalis
or trio peacocks - aulonocara
1 bristlenose pleco.

or tangs

trio neolamprologus leleupi
trio + julidochromis dickfeldi or transsciptus
or pair julidochromis regani
X chalinochromis brichardi
1 bristlenose pleco

would a shoal of smaller fish work to, either dwarf rainbows or tetras etc, as a dither fish, incase any shy fish.

Why the pleco? Really, they have no real place in a rift biotape.

I like your tang set up ideas better. Aulonocara don't mix well with mbuna imho, but it could work.

You're not going to need dither fish in these tanks... With an understocked tank, you will observe more natural fish behavior which you will enjoy.

Definately go for the Tangs. The malawis will be too large for the 40 gallon, and would end up cramped.

I think any of those tangs would work, and you would have to weed out the extra aggressors. I think most of those tangs pair up instead of breeding in harems, so you might need to start off with trios and get rid of the extra male/female.

I would not suggest a school of dither fish, A) because they would just likely get picked on... and B) because they need a very different water chemsitry and would not last long anyways.
