Is there a way to give a tank a shadowy look

I was wondering if there is a way to break up the light coming from your hood and to kind of give your tank more of a shadowy appearance? I would assume you could do this using plants, but I do not consider myself nearly experienced enough with fish to start trying plants as well. So is there any suggestions on how to do this??

I got this tip from Spykce (who got it from Raskolnikov). Put pieces of cardboard over parts of the hood, then put on the lights so light can only shine through certain parts.

Block sections of the light with cardboard, as so:

Augment with floating plants (fake work just fine) if you see fit:

heh

thanks Rask, your tanks were the ones that gave me the idea, but I couldn't remember whose it was. Do they make artificial floating plants btw??

PS: What is the big huge fish in the tank with your Betta?

Thanks, everyone.

Yoemen, almost any plastic plant floats (just remove the base). The fish that was with my betta was Hoplias malabaricus (I had tried for a few months before finding out that Betta splendens just isn't for me). I hope that the photo wasn't in poor taste.

? On my PC, the pix are small, I can barley even see the fish.

Oh, that was in reference to a different thread, Freddy.

As far as the tank shots above go, I don't believe that any fish are visible in those photos. I like to keep my stocking levels on the lower side.
