So, I am finishing up a paper on school finance reform....but I'm having an issue. For some reason, a black bar has inserted itself in a few places in my paper (like when you make a few asterisks and hit enter to form a horizontal rule)...and they're screwing with some stuff. I can't select a quote and tab it in - when I do, another black bar forms between the end of the quote and the next paragraph. There is another bar at the bottom of a page, and another one at the end of my paper.

I've tried copy pasting the text into a new document. But when I do, certain paragraphs transfer with black bars under them that don't even show up in the original! I know it's nothing virus-y related...it all started when I inserted ONE horizontal rule line to separate my notes from the text.

I can't delete these bars like I usually can. I can't figure out how to get rid of them.

Does anyone think they can fix it if I email them a copy? It's MS Word 2000.

Maybe someone who also has a good eye for mistakes could give it a looksee (not just grammar but content, too)? It's 11 pages but it's not finished.

Answer this if you think you could help and I'll email you a copy (PM me your email addy or leave it here if you are the type who dont' care who has your address!)

Thanks!

Well, as you all know, OG is a wonderful help. She has banished the black bars! Thank you:)

I'll share the solution: The bars were borders that were part of a Style. At a guess, the Style was automatically applied when some formatting changes that matched a default style were made. To fix, you can either locate the text block that has the Style setting, or select all text, Format: Borders and Shading, select None on the borders tab, select okay. Save!

Styles are really cool Word options, but can be really confusing if they are set to autoformat, and come on unwanted.

Editing is actually the easier part of my job. I'm currently tweaking and cleaning a database, and preparing the lesson plan for an upcoming class on it, as well as offering phone support for someone who's writing a hatchery manual--he's learning the wonders of Styles! I just wish I had time to actually give a training class on using the more involved aspects of Word!

I know what ya mean, OG... seems especially at this time of the year, there's no time for anything that may make things easier because of the mad rush to get everything in by the years end.... which unfortunately falls to my desk. And like you, the Word stuff is probably the easiest part of things.
