I bought a sponge fliter for my tank and I am having a little trouble with it. It's looks like this Filter . Im not quite sure how to set it up. There is a clear plastic tube that connects to the middle section and I thought I needed to stick an air stone down the tube but I guess I am wrong as the air stone doesn't fit. So next I just tried to hook the air hose up to the inside of the plastic tube. What that does is create large bubble that really aggitates that water. Is this right? I was under the impression that this filter was calm. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have absolutely no experience with sponge filters, but the idea is to have an airstone in the tube as you said. The rising air causes the water to rise and draws more water in through the sponge. There are very skinny airstones (the ones I've seen are white) for this. Maybe you do not have the correct airstone?
Hope this helps, or at least, hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong
I believe this is what you want...

You do need something to diffuse the air into bubbles. You want something that looks like this. It should fit inside the sponge, and may be white or gray as well as the shown green.

OrionGirl...lol! you threw me off with the new picture, I like it! I tried those green airstones but they are too big for the plastic tubing. Im guessing that I just need to get the smaller ones that beviking posted. Should my LFS carry them or are they something I need to special order?

Yeah, that's a bit out of character O.G....but nice. Kinda reminds me of a pregnant woman for some reason...are you trying to tell us something?

Everyone has the green stones, I figured you were using them or something similar. Your lfs should have or be able to get the discard-a-stone airstones.

I found some white air stones and they fit down the plastic tubing but there is still alot of big bubbles. I taped half a styrofoam cup over it to help cut down on the aggitation. I guess thats just how its going to be! thanks for the help!

Changed the pic--apparently the other one resembled something not-family friendly to many members. I didn't see it, until it was pointed out. And no, this one isn't saying anything either, just a bright abstract.

You don't put anything down the tube except the air hose. Put a gang valve on the airhose and lower the air flow to control how hard or soft the bubble get.
