I am buying a laptop from a guy I know who lives in Romania, he gave me shipping info, but its not coming up yet. How long does it take to get from Romania to Dallas using UPS Express method? 2-3 days, or a week or so?

I doubt most people here have had anything shipped from Romania. I'd guess the shipping info should hit the system within 24 hours of pickup, though.

I once shipped something to Romania via FedEx. That took about a week or so. But to get something here from there, expect a week or two for it to get to the States, and once it gets into the US Postal system it should take 2-3 days from there.

its not united states postal, its UPS - the brown , and express is like a fast way of shipping

Perhaps it would be best to contact UPS then... ask them how long to expect it to take!

I did, gave them the tracking number. Now it looks like the package hasnt even left, or picked up or anything. He sent me a print screen of a shipping label, with yesterdays date. Does this mean he has printed a shipping label, but could have in fact not sent the package?

I manage the shipping dept at the company that I work for, and we do a lot of intnl shipments. It can be really hard to estimate ship times because of customs, I've seen things get held up for unexplainable amounts of time because of customs. But like someone else said, if you have a tracking number, waybill, etc. you should be able to use that to track the shipment within 24 hrs or so of the shipment being picked up by the transporter.

I know i'll get yelled at for this but....
buying a laptop from someone in romania is VERY VERY brave. I hope you paid someway you can get your money back.....

Usually if you send a package with UPS it (the tracking info) will be in the system after 24h. If its not after 48 then he either printed a ticket but never sent the item.... or made a fake ticket.

You know that romania is in east europe right ???? ;)

Well, he wanted me to deposit money into western union. I made sure he cant get the money til I give him the password, but he still doesnt believe that I did this. This is why I believe he hasnt shipped. What can I do about this?

Well - its your money.
But i am european (german to be exact) and have good and personal experience with the "people of romania".

I would NEVER send money (money transfer, western union whatever) to east european countries for anything. (unless its a 5$ item where i dont mind the loss)
What if the item is faulty ? Broken ? Never gets sent to you ?

There is virtually nothing you can do to ever get your money back. East europe is a lawless place.... But that aside even if you pay someone with a money order inside the USA there are very good chances you'll never see your money again if they decide to take off with it.

Now dont get me wrong - i dont mean to preach or tell you what to do. BUT it is common sense to never do this kind of international transaction.

Of course i hope someone else might have better ideas/ advice for you and chimes in.

Well, he doesnt HAVE my money yet, thats the thing. Our agreement was I put the money in, he ships based on trust, once I get the laptop, test it, I give him the password so he can get his money. Now he wants me to go to a link on WU and take a printscreen of what it says when I put the account number in, but this gives all the information on getting the money out. This is why I am worrying.

all I can say, Infiniplex Syst is "ouch". My best wishes to you in that this transaction ends up being smooth. You may want to send him a copy of the form but with the numbers and stuff that he needs in order to get the money blanked out if it's even possible. If not, I wouldn't send anything with what he needs for the money on it until you get the laptop.

Hannys_Papa

Well just stick to your agreement. Wait for the laptop to arrive, test it and go from there. If it doesnt get there dont pay....

I wouldnt give/ show him anything that he could use to get his hands on the money - again this wasnt part of the original agreement.

Anyone want to help me pin this guy? He sent me an email saying he "BLOCKED" the shipment because I didnt give him a screenshot. This is bull, if it was blocked, it would have shown up on the website as blocked, and the person on the phone at ups would have told me the same thing.

You would probably be best to walk away from this deal now. Sounds like you are being conned. Good luck.

Why go through all the trouble of buying a used laptop that is not guaranteed to be in good condition?

If you live in the US there are too many places to get good quality laptops for cheap.

He may be trying to con you, but at the same time, using your method, he probably thinks you're trying to con him. I sure as heck wouldn't send someone a laptop trusting that they will give me the "password" on arrival.

Not worth it at all IMO, just buy one from dell online.

I'm with Spartan on this. You can also get a cheaper laptop from overstock.com..... it just seems like this is causing way too much of a hassle for a used laptop.

Im with the gang on this one...You are VERY brave to do biz with e. Europe...One thing to consider in the future is using an Escrow service...They are a neutral 3rd party that holds the money in trust until you receive and accept the item...If all is well, you have the escrow service pay them...

Doesn't anyone else feel rather "under the bridge" on this one??

Lemme get this straight... you put the money in western union, he hasn't sent you the laptop, wants more info about the money BEFORE he sends you the laptop, and you're STILL dealing with this guy??

Jesus! Get your money back from Western Union and move on with your life man! What am I missing here!??!?!

Most (if not all) European countries work with a far higher voltage than the US. Even if you get the laptop it will probably blow out on you.

I get the feeling that there's mistrust on both sides. Walk away and buy something closer to home.

Most (recent) laptop power supplies will work with a range of voltages.. checking the 3 I have laying around here they all work with a supply of 100 - 240V AC. 50-60Hz.

That shouldn't be a problem..

personally, unless it was an incredibly good deal, I'd be buying something close to home, but to each his own.

NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER pay for ANYTHING like that through western union or any other money transfer like that...!!! Only from or to people you know personally ! I can't remember the reasons why...but I do remember reading some dire warnings for doing so !!

It has to do with big scams that foreigners are pulling on folks...when they ask for you to send money via these western union places...it's a big red flag ! I think it has something to do with it not being traceable, but I'm not sure...

DON"T give him the password........and CANCEL that payment !!!

Heh, I never thought I'd see an actual eBay scam off of eBay. Or did you buy this thing on eBay?

This is a SCAM -- seriously -- it happens all the time. Go to eBay and check the discussion board Trust & Safety (Safe Harbour)

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/forum.jspa?forumID=107

Read. Read some more. Notice how all those overseas scams are pretty much identicle to yours.

Oh, and read the stickies about Western Union and stuff.

You're one of the lucky ones, you can walk away from this "deal" and not have lost your money.
