I've often dug up rocks outside and transplanted them to my tanks. I do recommend that you give them a vigorous cleaning: I use a mild bleach solution and lots of hot water. Some people "bake" their rocks, too. I've never had a problem taking rocks out of nature and incorporating them into my tanks, but I'm rather paranoid and always clean the **** out of them. :D

boiling them is a good idea. If the rock won't fit in the pot do one side and then flip it. About 15-20 minutes will do. I also am paranoid-----i soak them in a bleach solution first, then boil, then soak in a highly concentrated water solution with Novaqua or Prime.
I too encorporate natures stones in my tank. I have everything from slate and wetstone from the Ozarks to river rock straight out of Texas streams. I think it ads another dynamic---not only are you showcasing your fish but also your adventures.
